BLUES IN THE MISSISSIPPI NIGHT LP Sonny Boy #1, Memphis Slim, Big Bill Broonzy
United Artists UAL 4027, subtitled Authentic Field Recordings of Negro Folk Music. On the back the subtitle is The Real Story of the Blues Sung and told by three MISSISSIPPI DELTA BLUES MEN Recorded and Edited by ALAN LOMAX. The album consists of frank conversations about the blues, Southern life and race, along with musical selections, and Lomax decided conceal the identities of the artists behind the pseudonyms of Sib, Leroy and Natchez (even in 1959 when this LP was released in the U.S., 12 years after the original recording session). The album also includes a song by Alabama singer Vera Hall and three tracks by Parchman prison inmates (the only Mississippians on the album, since Memphis Slim and John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson were from Tennessee and Broonzy, despite his own claims, was from Arkansas.) Liner notes are by Lomax. Original deep groove pressing (mono). Record is VG+, jacket VG+ with some surface wear, scotch tape at the bottom and a name and address stamped on the back.
LPs and 45s are graded M (mint), NM (near mint), VG+, VG (very good), VG-, G+, G (good), G-, F (fair), and P (poor). A VG+ record may have some visible scuffs and light scratches and plays well with little surface noise. Scratches on records graded VG, VG-, and below are deep enough to feel with your fingernail, or there may be scratches throughout that cause surface noise. On records in the G+, G and G- range the level of the music is still above the surface noise caused by scuffs and scratches. Surface noise is as loud as the music on records graded F and louder than the music on P records.
Jackets graded VG+ have only slight wear; jackets graded VG are more worn but still intact unless defects are noted. G jackets show definite damage and F and P jackets are probably falling apart. Splits, markings, cut corners, and other defects will be noted.
