Bob Downes Open Music : Electric City 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st press 1970 Vertigo

This first pressing plays with stunning audio across both sides with no intrusion.  This is a FINAL UPGRADE without question - the clarity, depth and power of the audio is comparable to an unplayed record that's how immaculate it is.  As always I have listened to every track in full and I have only graded one as Mint- all the rest are Mint!  And that - is there only due to a very very quiet tick at the beginning of an intro.  The clarity is incredible and it is clear this record has hardly been played.  It is visually stunning and has hardly any spindle wear.  A museum piece!

The cover is in excellent condition with only some creasing at the foot of the inner spine and the original Vertigo inner is also in superb shape.

Visual description

The vinyl is stunning and still retains an immaculate glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  I can only see a small number of very faint hairlines looking under a bright light and it could hardly look any better.  The Vertigo labels are incredibly clean and have only a couple of spindle lines on each side.

Play grading

S1 begins with a stunning rendition of 'No Time Like The Present' and it plays with a clarity, power and definition that can only be described 'as new'.  Every section could not play with any greater precision and there is zero distortion on the top end - no background on the fade out either.  It has to grade as Mint such is the quality.

The instrumental 'Keep Off The Grass' is just as impressive and plays with sublime clarity from start to finish.  Mint

It is already obvious this vinyl has hardly been played and 'Don't Let Tomorrow Get You Down' keeps up this fine standard.  A strong bass line from Flowers as you would expect and again there is literally no background.  Another Mint track.

The next instrumental 'Dawn Until Dawn' again plays with stunning precision with no sign of any background and 'Go Find Time' also plays 'as new' with a clarity and power 'plucked' straight from '70!  I cannot overstate just how pristine the audio is - nothing is lost, every note so clean and precise - and we have another fade out with not even a solitary dust tick, that's a measure of the clarity we have here.  Both these tracks grade as Mint

'Walking On' ends the side with exceptional audio once more.  A powerful number and yet no distortion and perfect clarity from the first note to the last.  Mint

The quiet intro on 'Crush Hour' plays perfectly and as the volume and pace pick up the playback cannot be faulted.  Once again it is 'as new' and that is no exaggeration.  It a record from this era has been well preserved and hardly played and with a 'clean' there is no reason why the sonic quality should be affected.  The power is undiminished and it is quite simply Mint from start to finish.

The same applies to 'West II' as it just could not play any better.  Another classy instrumental and another Mint grade.

'In Your Eyes' has one very light static / tick right at the start but blink and you miss it!  The opening vocal section has no intrusion and as the volume increases the playback is superb, no surprise I guess!  Another strong bass sound here and it continues to play with stunning clarity and depth.  A couple of barely audible statics so I will say Mint-

'Piccadilly Circles' is a powerful dynamic track and yet the sonic quality is out of this world!  The clarity and definition of the audio is STUNNING and with every section the playback just gets better and better, well you know what I mean!  The high octane finish is breathtaking and Mint is again deserved.

'Gonna Take A Journey' begins perfectly and the first very quiet piece plays beautifully with not even a dust tick.  Easily the longest track on the album it continues to play with imperious quality through every 'vocal' and instrumental section.  There are a number of powerful sections and yet they all play to the highest standard with nothing getting in the way of the 'as new' audio.  Seriously this is stunning and it demands to be played loud!  Jazz-rock at its best.  I have no hesitation in grading this as Mint it truly is a phenomenal version.

The Gatefold & Vertigo Inner Sleeve

The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal.  This is only in one area and is most obvious at the bottom of the inner spine where you can see some creasing.  It is only very minimal on the 'outside' i.e. the front cover.  The edges and wide spine are in superb order and the corners are also very clean.  The opening edge looks untouched.  The front cover is unmarked apart from a couple of score lines which you can only see when you hold it at a certain angle.  That minor crease bottom left also.  The back cover is near perfect with only a couple of minor blemishes and the inside of the gatefold is unmarked and just has that creasing by the inner spine.

The original Vertigo inner is in superb condition with no side splits or tears and only a little age related fading on the bottom edges.  There is no obvious creasing at all.

Play tested on my Rega P2 with AT-VM95EN Cart / Denon PMA-520AE Amp / B&W 684 Speakers

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
