Description
This set comprises everything that Sony has in the vaults from 1963 not already issued. This includes one side of outtakes from The Times They are A Changin, the best part of four sides of Dylan's concert in April at Town Hall NYC, and two sides of a later concert from October at Carnegie Hall. There are also tapes from the Basement at Gerde's Folk City, from the home of Eve and Mac McKenzie and from radio and TV broadcasts including a couple of tracks from the March on Washington at which Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream' speech.
The historical interest of this material is great - Dylan is pretty much in full protest singer mode, and he is making his way in the world, playing to 1000 people in Town Hall whereas the past year he had been playing to audiences of dozens, and clearly there are more people yet at Carnegie Hall. He is still singing occasionally personal songs. He seems to be in great form wherever he goes and the cumulative effect is very powerful. There are few tracks of songs that haven't previously been released - it is doubtful that Dusty Old Fairgrounds or Dylan's take on That's All Right Mama, or East Laredo Blues or New Orleans Rag would of themselves be strong inducements to invest in this set - though they fit in well and add variety to what is otherwise quite repetitious (there are quite a few takes on Blowin In The Wind, Bob Dylan's Dream, Masters of War etc).
The sound quality is very good on the studio outtakes and on the Town Hall concert sides. Otherwise it is somewhat variable, taken from tapes that have not always worn well. And some of the Carnegie Hall material seems to have been taped at too high a level of the machine to cope with. But it's all highly listenable
