Label Conditions: Both in beautiful clean conditions: fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few super-fine spindle traces looking almost point blank – indeed side one has barely anything at all.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 117 grams. Not the heaviest I have ever had, but the sound on this copy is fantastic.

Rarity: Moderate: any 60s pressing that has hardly been played and offers such wonderful sound is much harder to find.

Brief Info: What album collection could ever be truly complete without a copy of this one? Even by Dylan’s exceptional standards, this is a remarkable recording and includes one of music’s greatest ever songs in ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ with its famous organ riff and repetitive chorus. This is my personal favourite 60s Dylan album with not a wasted second on this record, his sixth, that again is a lesson in lyrical brilliance. This is a record that will still be listened too in another fifty years – and with care, this fantastic record will still be more than up to the job. This stereo copy with it’s stunning labels and clean looks, sounds fantastic and the cover a beauty. Okay, not a first issue, but still early from the latter 60s and for those wanting fresh good looks and pristine sound, well look no further.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this being critical. A single format with front laminate, that wraps around the closed edges and ends on three exterior rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and still includes the ‘Patents pending’ text. This one has the black and white CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A beautiful front with laminate fully adhered and very shiny and clear with barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling. Just a hint of darking on the spine edge with any surface creases fine and small and most showing little. This has the large stereo on the cover, so clearly manufactured while the mono version was still very much available.

Cover Back: The back is still very clean and white and has barely aged at all with any trace of grubbiness minuscule. No rubbing, ringwear or creasing with any marks minute to the main back panel. The flipbacks are all very neat too with clean ends that have avoided burring or lifting. A very small minor ‘graze’ on the top right corner and again a minor hint of toning on the spine edge.

Top Edge: Practically wear-free, smooth and scuff-free laminate.

Bottom Edge: Amost the same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very clean with no grubbiness on the exposed edges, mostly very sharp with barely any wear again, any thickening or burring little and light. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, slightly bowed as the laminate tightens and with little compression. All text is pristine perfect and well centred under solid lamnate that just has a small scuff near the top.

Corners: Few rubs and being white, any would show little anyway. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive all-round example of this very famous 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: an unlined CBS promotional inner, this promotes albums up to ‘Nashville Skyline’ in the Dylan catalogue, that came out in 1969. Only very mildly aged with a hint of discolour and barely any creasing and all edges unsplit.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++), hardly does this impressive record full justice, probably played a couple of times only with any surface marks tiny, few and ultra faint, seen critically under bright angled light. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen masterpiece plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this still early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
