This album stands out from Dylan's other albums, the songs appearing to be semi linked vignettes from a mythical-pastoral American folk history. The strong themes of moralism and religion are part and parcel of the narrative and are not preachy like on Slow Train Coming. A dreamscape of magical realism pervades the lyrics, with vivid wild west period imagery. The simple, stripped down backing amplifies the intensity of the strong driving melodies, with some great bass lines and drumming defining the arrangements. It is in my personal top five and I am amazed I remember all the lyrics, 50 years later. I try not to play it too often to preserve the the mysterious power contained within this masterpiece. I read on an online blog that the album is Dylan's answer to Sergeant Pepper. I have no idea if that is true but it's a kinda neat idea!
(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY PHIL BRADBYRY, ALL MUSIC GUIDE /ALLMUSIC.COM/)
If you've never heard this legendary album in MONO, you've never heard it at all !!! One of three or four of Bob Dylan’s greatest works (for me, personally, this is a strong contender for # 3 spot - right after "Highway 61" and "Blonde on Blonde"), this 1967 album came only months after Bob Dylan had a near-fatal motorcycle accident and a close encounter with the Grim Reaper, which explains the doom-and-gloom laden atmosphere, ascetic production, scaled-down arrangements and a plethora of Biblical references all over the place, which all make this wonderful album even more appealing and intriguing. This is a one-of-a-kind in entire Bob Dylan output. Nothing - absolutely nothing - matches this collection of songs in terms of sheer expression, mysticism and poetic imagery. So much so that Jimi Hendrix covered two songs from this album ("All along the Watchtower" and "Drifters Escape") , Janis Joplin and Joe Cocker both covered the same track ("Dear Landlord"), and the list of other artists who found these songs irresistible and very coverable goes on and on and on. And then, there are musicians: This album assembles in one place the cream of Nashville studio musicians circa 1968: Charles McCoy (Bass), Kenny Butrey (Drums) and Pete Drake (steel & other guitars). Now, for the mono mix. Unlike its stereo counterpart, mono mix is decidedly cleaner, punchier and much, much more vivid and better defined. The rhythm section and the voices come through loud and clear. This is the LAST Bob Dylan album released in mono. Mono copies of this album are perversely rare and increasingly hard to find in virtually any condition. Finding a still sealed original MONO copy?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see.
Finally, if all of this leaves you unimpressed you can always contemplate the cover photo of Dylan and the four musicians which, purportedly, shows the four Beatles "buried" somewhere in the background. Hmmm. I could not find them. Maybe you will have better luck…

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). · CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) THE ALBUM IS STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).
(b) The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 20:1.
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
