Label/Format: CBS - original orange format with the main inner area textured on side one, and the entire label on side two roughly textured (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both little short of immaculate: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with any of the tiny few spindle traces very small, light and faint. Always the best news possible when a scarce mono record has without doubt, hardly been played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 122 grams. This a little below average for the time.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce in mono and in the US it was the final Dylan to make the single channel format and is very rare indeed with minimal numbers pressed. Also copies in this type of condition are even harder to find, this one looks hardly played and sounds superb.

Brief Info: Another brilliant album, his eighth, issued around 18 months after the masterpiece that was ‘Blonde on Blonde’. It was the penultimate mono album by Dylan as the format was slowly being phased-out, and by 1969 had largely done so for new albums. Between times he has been recovering from a major motorcycle accident and quite how the man could follow the previous album with something almost as good was an incredible achievement. With sparse instrumentation and totally wonderful songs, this stands high in his impressively long catalogue. With US mono versions very difficult to track down, a rarer chance for all to hear on this elusive UK mono cut version, I can hardly imagine finding a better copy also.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front lamination that covers all the edge folds and ending on the back via the spine. The back is unprotected, matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the Upton Printing Group and is the genuine mono cover with NO stereo references. Also included is the CBS orange promotional inner sleeve, in equally super condition.

Lamination & Front: A really lovely looking front with genuine freshness and clean looks. The laminate is shiny and very clear and fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. The only small blemish is on the bottom edge near the left that has been ‘pinched’ making it appear a darker. Even under light, barely any traces of any dulling and any surface marks or other blemishes are tiny, few and faint. This vintage cover really does defy it’s age and will not prove easy to match or find much better.

Cover Back: Little short of as made: this is really lovely. No ring wear, creasing and very clean with any ageing or blemishes less than minuscule. Just the tiniest trace of discolour on the very bottom of the laminate end on the bottom corner – this nit-picking beyond critical almost for the sake of it.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both unworn and still straight, the laminate solid, very smooth with no scuffs to the fingertips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically as made bar a small scuff very near the bottom corner. Solid, straight with barely any compression – the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate that remains fresh and crystal clear. The small bottom scuff apart, this is practically as good as they get.

Corners: Three of the four are practically perfect and only a small rub on the spine bottom (as mentioned already). Even that one retains very fine shape, the other three near mint.

Cover Summary: An very close to outstanding all-round example of this scarce late 60’s mono cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): a truly beautiful example of this famous CBS inner gives very few clues to it’s great age. A real fresh looking vintage unlined promotional inner that will rarely be found better. The window circles are pristine and all edges are unsplit (with no repairs). No creasing worthy of note or grubbiness and looking in superb shape with only minimal traces of seam glue darkening on the rear. Even the recessed and shaped top opening is crisp and incredibly neat, all strong indicators the record has hardly made the trip out.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and maybe even harsh at that. At this later era for the mono format, most who purchased them did so to play on the appropriate equipment. Many that are seen show the fact all too well with matching very disappointing sound. Penetrating scratches, dulled and grimy fingermarked laden surfaces and grubby spindle-ridden labels. Chalk and cheese, this has NOTHING remotely like that. This copy without any doubt has hardly even been played. A superb visual record that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. Any surface trace marks are tiny, very few and faint with critical viewing under bright angled light. How many records this great age will have zero marks if scrutinised closely enough? - let’s be honest. This beauty should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This much rarer mono record plays up to it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. All the songs play beautifully with little at all unwanted. The odd sporadic tick or two is near impossible to avoid on the quieter albums, remember this is at least a 43-year-old mono record, how many will ever play without the odd gentle reminder what you actually listening too? Without any doubt a record that has avoided all the perils of blunt, chipped piledriver mono stylus from the distant past. This has the sheen and lustre of a very little handled record with the lustre and sheen that does come close to reminding of new. We all know what so many of these single-channel records look and sound like these days. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp and devoid of ‘mono noise’. I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and mainly carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. I also remind I play all my records on a Linn LP12 Sondek, still one of the world’s most revealing turntables for which mono records were not really designed. But when found this clean, they are a thing of real beauty and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This late mono record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
