Rarity: The album itself moderately scarce, this was not a major seller, especially first issues. First pressings were a little different with an embossed cover both sides. Most examples of are totally smooth. Soundtrack albums rarely sell well, but more interest would have been shown in this one after the success of the song ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’, hence second-run covers omitted the more costly embossing making the first edition examples rarer and far more interesting and attractive.

Brief Info: Album number 12 for Bob Dylan and the soundtrack for the Sam Peckinpah western film of the same name. It received mixed reviews at the time and soundtracks seldom sell well compared to regular new albums, indeed only after the success of the single ‘Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door’ did this peak at a fairly lowly 29 in the UK. But I seldom take any notice of opinion or critics and prefer to make up my own mind. Many so called ‘classics’ often disappoint me and many less-lauded albums I really like. That is what make music so personal and interesting and will always divide opinion – and how boring would it be if all were the same? Although this is primarily an instrumental album with only a few vocal songs, it is a lovely balanced and entertaining set and regardless of being a soundtrack album, it stands-up on it’s own terms and merit. This an impressive first issue that includes the embossed large lettering on the front cover, also the large black border rectangle on left of the back is embossed as well. Most seen are smooth finished making the first editions considerably rarer. The record appears little played and sounds terrific. Underrated, and I feel unjustly so, this has lovely music and few Dylan fans will not be impressed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single unlaminated format with matt surfaces with the main title front lettering embossed as is the back box as mentioned above. Printed and made in England by Shorewood and includes the original CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Clearly a cover prone to wear and grubbiness – this has little more than traces. Very few marks or creasing, this has aged little and looks really impressive. The large black lettering is quite deeply embossed and adds extra detail and classic to this otherwise basic front. This raised detail is perfect and undamaged, totally unrubbed at all.

Cover Back: The dramatic graphic back is superb with barely anything of note to fault. The large vertical rectangular box being the embossed detail this side.

Top Edge: Minimal wear or darkening and straight.

Bottom Edge: Similar with just a hint on the very end right.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with minimal hint of thickening. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight and generally clean with a little gentle patchy compression. All text is perfect and unworn, also well centred for good measure.

Corners: Any tip rubbing light with minimal visibility due to being white, small traces on the back ones. Mostly excellent shape retained without bashes or noteworthy dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this clearly more wear-prone embossed original cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. With few visual blemishes, this attractive item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a fragile unlined CBS promotional inner in near top condition. Clean, with any paper ageing or darkening gentle and light, still quite fresh with hardly any creasing, this has the wave-recessed top opening. No edge splits or repairs, this will not prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better still. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed on top quality pure vinyl. Even under bright angled light, any surface marks are very fine, wispy and faint, there are no penetrating stylus marks. Overall, a top quality original that should please many, if not most Dylan fans and collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly registered, and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this genuine first issue I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
