Label/Format: CBS, double ridged with a beautifully rough textured finish and 33 speed indicator. Later pressings became smooth and 33 became 33 1/3. The tiny text: ‘RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1964’ is present just below half way down towards the right. Intensely bright orange, both are a thing of real beauty and so rare when seen like this. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, intensely coloured and attractive with light to light(+) spindle marks. These being quite fine and few in number for a record of this huge age. With normal viewing, they barely even show, I deliberately shot the pictures in natural light which emphasises them more.

Rarity: The very early pressed stereo copies are scarce, and can be considered quite rare in such fine condition. This was the age of the mono record and few people had stereo equipment at this time. A lovely record that has survived all the perils of that decade and still offers nigh on pristine sound. Super clean sound from Dylan’s goldern folk era.

Brief Info: Dylan’s third album and another classic acoustic folk set. This one is incredibly early and so hard to find little played from so far back. This has the paste-on back panel style cover that is uncredited. This has aged little and like the record is in lovely condition with few clues to it’s vintage. For fans of this legendary folk singer, this very impressive copy should thrill.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this hardly does a hardly worn cover full justice. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges and ends under the paste-on style back panel. This vintage example, a likely first, did not have external flipbacks. As stated, this one has no printer’s credits.

Lamination & Front: The laminate on this cover retains a fantastic shine, freshness and clarity with just a faint tone line near the right edge. No lifting and barely any creasing at all with any marks to the superb smooth surface tiny, very few and faint as seen critically under angled light. I can hardly imagine finding this vintage stereo Dylan cover front better.

Cover Back: Age-defying and as clean are you are likely to see. The white panel is still just that – white, untoned or darkened, this retains a remarkable freshness with no rubbing, ring marks and barely a crease to be seen again. All the panel ends are fully adhered with no lifting or burring. The only tiny hint of burr traces on the left opening edge and any marks are tiny, very few and faint. Simply compare both front and back to most seen – this is a different league and class.

Top Edge: Super smooth and fully laminated, totally unscuffed or peeled, quite straight and unworn.

Bottom Edge: As above but dead straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, generally sharp with little wear and guaranteed untrimmed. A little thickening and burr traces in places, but showing so little evidence of wear, it reitterates how few times the record has made the trip out.

Spine and Text: Very solid and quite straight again. Possibly a little compressed, but I am sure this style of cover never had a hard square edge even from new. Ultra smooth clear laminate with zero scuffs or blemishes and all text is perfect and unworn, even this retains a deep shine. The text centred a little low in manufacture.

Corners: Barely any tip wear at all with superb pointed shape retained with no dinks and hardly even a tip crease.

Cover Summary: A remarkable vintage cover, beautifully looked-after and my grading of EX++ is probably too cautious. Just the very slight thickening on the opening edge stops a full Mint(-) grading and this beautiful piece of folk history should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: this as aged a little with some mainly light browning of the seam adhesive – more moderate near the top opening that has a little gentle edge crinkle too. This is a heavy-duty plain white inner that is polylined as seen through two very neat and generally neat window circles. Minimal creasing with just a few small light marks. No edge splits or repairs. This is British patented with ‘British and Other Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: each side has a visible surface mark that are non-penetrating (thus surface mark), which have NO affect on sound at all. This grading hardly does a record of this huge age full justice, this is a beauty. Any other surface marks are very fine, few and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy very modesly played on all the available evidence – I am not going to guess numbers – I will let the superb sound do the talking. Effortless, easy tracking and a joy to view and hear, this folk classic will take a vast degree of beating, and this very early, more elusive stereo copy should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. A strong, realistic and beautifully produced stereo recording that has totally distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Mr Zimmerman himself could be in the room with you performing, it’s really that good. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly difficult album. Acoustic guitar and vocal, no loud passages for blemishes to hide in, but none needed here. The odd sporadic tick cannot be ruled out totally on such a delicate record and material. Few early copies will even match this early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel certain this record has been played very modestly indeed and generally, with care – the cover storage impeccable. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, a landmark recording from a living legend. This copy will prove very difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended. Records this age and quality only come along very occasionally and if this title is wanted, it’s worthy of high consideration. I think it looks and sounds great.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
