Label/Format: CBS with intense orange colour and the inner areas textured. The outer rim area is smooth, these ridges indicate a genuine CBS pressing.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive, spindle marks are relatively few, but quite long, but fine and fairly faint, there is no wear around the hole area.

Brief Info: The third Bob Dylan album which features only him with guitar and harmonica. His classic folk-era and now an album with all original songs. It sold generally well peaking at No 4 in the UK. This a very fine stereo example that was a pleasure to play-grade.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A single format with front lamination, this covers all the folds and ends on three large rear flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth and includes a large ‘STEREO’ sticker. Printed and made in England by Dawson Rossiter Ltd, includes the orange CBS promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A couple of small corner tip rubs and a faint, fine thumb crease on the right apart, this superb front has little else to fault. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with barely any dulling and no lifting. Any other creasing little, ultra fine and faint, a tiny burr/nick on the right edge is almost nit-picking small. The early Dylan picture looks fantastic as-seen.

Cover Back: Impressive again with any grubbiness or ageing to the unprotected text panel minimal and light. CBS decided mono covers were the norm at this time, so stereo copies included a stereo sticker to denote as such. This large sticker has never been removed or picked at and only gently darkened with age. Fewer of these were made this large size making this cover early, later ones were gold coloured and shaped. All flipbacks are solidly neat and undamaged with crisp ends that lack the usual ugly grubbiness most seem to acquire over time.

Top Edge: Thin, and only slightly bowed, fully laminated, smooth and unworn.

Bottom Edge: Mostly as above with any chips to the laminate tiny, very few and light. A moderate chip/rub to the right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine bar tiny chips to the ‘AN’ in ‘DYLAN’, all othe text is close to perfect and well-centred. Solid, straight with minimal compression with the laminate solidly intact.

Corners: Any tip rubs mostly small and light, nearer moderate on the bottom right as stated above. Very fine or better shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive and age-defying item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined CBS promotional inner in very fine condition. Two crisp undamaged window circles, hardly creased with all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one with the large boxed “CBS stereo records can be played on mono equipment” text. An inner with minimal hint of ageing and almost as neat as they get.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with modest, careful plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album up to and above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Being a totally acoustic and sparse guitar and vocal album, the odd gentle sporadic tick or blemish is near impossible to avoid on records this substantial age. Few available copies will outperform this still quite early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only quite lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Little or any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
