Description
BOB WILHITE : Sounds and Shapes (Los Angeles County Museum of Art [USA]) BW-1) 1978.
Record is VG+ with light marks only. It's a pretty poor pressing and a very quiet record (see below) so it's rather noisy at times, no loud repeated pops, or skips, but it's pretty scratchy. Cover is also VG+ with moderate wear to the edges and seams, including some cracks and small paper tears, but no splits.
Original copy of this extraordinary unknown sound art LP, released by the LA County Museum of Art in 1978. Side one is 16 individual tracks of all kinds of sound sculptures/homemade instruments, played by the children pictured on the front cover. Each instrument is recorded individually, in some cases playing melodies approximating "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", "Frère Jacques", etc. Side two is entirely blank -- there are grooves but they contain no sound that we can detect. There may have been an insert with some sort of explanatory notes but if so, it's no longer present.
Artist/designer/instrument builder Bob Wilhite is credited as instructer and producer on the cover. Wilhite also produced/edited/appeared on the desirable Sound LP released by the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art the following year (also with Yoshi Wada, Bob Bates, Tom Recchion, Christina Kubisch, Terry Fox, John Duncan, etc), but we aren't aware of any other recordings by him and we've never seen this LP listed on any sound art/sound sculpture discography (or any discography at all for that matter). Rare.
