Bobbie Gentry is typically categorized as a country artist.  However, although each of the tracks on this debut LP is a vignette of her rural southern roots, none of them are country.  Four are vaguely Bacharach-esque sophisticated pop – “I Saw an Angel Die” and “Sunday Best”, which have a bit of bossa nova influence; “Papa, Wontcha Let Me Go to Town With You”, which is a jazzy waltz; and “Hurry, Tuesday Child”, which has a lazy summer feeling.  The other six tracks are sort of a blend of swamp rock and soul.  The title track, of course, is Gentry’s signature song, and it is powerful and timeless.  The remaining five are essentially variations on it; their lyric content is diverse and less stark (especially the novelty piece “Bugs”), but musically they verge on indistinguishability… “Mississippi Delta” is the most electric, and “Niki Hoeky” (the only tune Gentry didn’t write) is the most fun.  Fortunately, the pop and swamp-rock tracks alternate – until the very end.  When “Lazy Willie” fades out and “Ode to Billie Joe” starts up, it’s impossible not to get the impression that the track is on repeat.  There are no bad songs on the album, though, and the arrangements (by Jimmie Haskell) are cool in a very 60s way.

(c)           The record is  apparently  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
