Description
Bold started out as "The Esquires" in Amherst, Massachusetts. Formed by Steve Walker (guitar, vocals) and Bob LaPalm (lead guitar), they were attending the University of Massachusetts and impressed another fellow student and fledging musician “Taj Mahal” who found the band gigging at frat parties and bars until he left for California to make his mark. As “The Esquires” they recorded a single that got some local airplay. After a year they played engagements as “Steve Walker and the Bold”. Showcasing clubs around Massachusetts, they shortened their name to “Bold” and opened for the likes of “Big Brother and the Holding Company”, “Hendrix” and others including their former friend “Taj Mahal”. They refined their skills as a bonafied contender in the clubs throughout greater Massachusetts and they seemed to be on their way to the big time. But, three more years passed before they were approached for a full album. By then their garage sounds had drifted to a psychedelic phase. ABC records signed them and they brought in Bill Szymczyk (who also had authority over “James Gang” and “Silk”). He brought out all the bands best qualities for the album, but the group was uncomfortable in the studio. They felt subdued and thought the studio couldn’t capture the raw sounds and excitement they stirred up on stage. Disagreements and arguing ensued. Some of the songs were cut short and some of the studio finagling didn't set well with the band. Regardless of how the band felt, the album does not disappoint. With dreamy vocals, driving organ, dual lead guitars and mild special effects, they are sometimes described as clones to Cleveland’s "Damnation". When the album was released, it wound up directly in the cut out bins. Bold then broke up, knowing that they had their one shot. Most of the guys left the music business and started a real life with steady income. Bob LaPalm and drummer Tim Griffin formed “Clean Living” for a couple of countrified psych albums. Bassist Steve Walker continued with music relocating to Lake Tahoe and at last notice was happily playing the casino circuit with his “Steve Walker Band”.
The Cover has some ring and edge wear and has a small drill hole upper left corner, but overall looks pretty good. The record plays EX or better with no audible ticks or noise.
