Label/Format: Liberty – Original blue format with smooth finish.

Label Condition: Clean and attractive and hardly any spindle marks, the odd faint traces only. Being honest, the labels are truly fantastic but the record’s playing surfaces do have some light surface marks and paper scuffs. All totally superficial however and this scarce mono record plays beautifully throughtout.

Cat Number: LBL 83056.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 144 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: A little easier to find in mono in my experience, but harder to find a copy that will play to near perfection in this format. Although the record has surface marks, they are all superficial and I am very sure this has hardly been played, just slightly heavy-handed maybe. For quality mono sound, still unique to the vinyl format, this classic Bonzo’s album will never be easy to find better. There is another issue which I think makes this copy rare – and this will not be to everyone’s taste as its a major manufacture flaw – but an interesting one, well I think so anyway. The back cover, about 3 inches from the top edge down has been cut all the way through. Very neatly indeed, but what proves beyond any doubt whatsoever this is a manufacture fault or error, is the fact the laminate is sitting ON-TOP of the cut which is indeed holding this together very solidly. I have never seen such a fault on a cover before and it’s probably unique. In the world of stamp collecting, collectors pay huge prices for such major printing or manufacture faults as they are so incredibly rare. This cover flaw cannot be faked, who would even want to?, the fact is this major finishing issue even got out of the factory unnoticed. As I said, not one for everyone, but something unusual to say the least – you decide. As I always say on any item on offer if it has an imperfection, any doubts, do not bid.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Probably one of the more overlooked ‘classics’ from this famous music year. Originally formed as a 20s-style jazz revivalist band but they soon found their nichè elsewhere. This debut album, dedicated to King Kong, from the British kings of satire around this time. A brilliant album, my personal favourite and I never tire hearing it. It includes some absolutely wonderful songs, witty, catchy and a little eccentric and all are priceless gems. Comedy and satire are blended with zany jazz some pop and rock. This is sure to appeal to fans of Zappa’s early Mothers, check out the front cover: Smith in the centre could almost be Frank. The ‘Bonzo’s’ became relatively popular in the late 60’s and even had regular TV appearances on programmes like ‘Do Not Adjust Your Set’ and even a hit single followed with ‘The Urban Spaceman’. The material was often revolutionary and a little risqué – all in typically ‘British’ style. Wacky, zany, inventive and original, this is great entertainment and although the record has some surface marks, they do not sound and it plays very well indeed with barely anything unwanted at all. Wonderful entertainment with the very different mono mix from one of the 60s most entertaining and totally unique acts.

Cover Grade and Format: This is near impossible to grade with the cut across the back, but taken purely on looks it has to be minimum EX. A single format, laminated front and back, ‘mono’ clearly stated on the cover with its original number. Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd, London. With the cut COVERED by the laminate, it’s without any doubt a manufacture flaw and its incredibly neat and has only negligible visual effect. I feel something a little ‘different’ for the specialist collector.

Lamination – Front & Back: Great artwork that typifies the contents and looking clean and fresh. All is solid and clear with no lifting or blisters. It retains a rich shine and any creases light and fine, most edge types that few covers ever avoid totally. Can I make it very clear, the laminate over the cut line on the back is NOT split and the entire back lamination is one piece, hence the manufacture flaw is covered totally which holds the cut together. In no way could this be faked or done by any owner, it would prove totally impossible which is why I think this unusual occurence is interesting for cover collectors. Practically devoid of friction rubs or dulling, even under angled light this looks superb. There are traces of toning around the edges but very faint indeed. Now 42-years-old, this has more than stood the test-of-time and really does look nice and the cut back has only modest visual impact but present nonetheless – any doubts or issues with flaw – do not bid.

Top & Bottom Edges: Both practically unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear, no feathering or ‘grime-lines’, no trimming. Odd tiny burr trace if being critical. Record is stored on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very nice spine, the only blemish, yes you guessed, the cut which ends just a couple of millimetres on to the front. Solidly laminated, straight with only a little light compression, all text is perfect and unworn, the ends tapered in manufacture.

Corners: All exceptionally neat and sharp with any tip rubs tiny.

Cover Summary: An unusual ‘Gorilla’ original cover and not one for all. Major manufacture flaws that make it into the shops are unusual and clearly this was not even noticed in quality control (if they had it). Still attractive and it will not be too easy to find much better (the obvious apart). This should please the many collectors, maybe the specialists reading this too, but the discerning who only want perfection or close-too. I have made the fault very clear, so you decide.

The Book: VG+ simply because the back cover has small tear on the right edge, without that an excellent grading would have applied. A 12-page B&W book in fine condition but more ‘used’ than the one with my stereo copy on offer. The top staple is secure with no problems, the lower staple has pulled from the cover but inside fine. The front cover has a few mild marks but the pages inside and back are in very nice, clean conditions with no tears or creasing. This is fairly rare and only came with some copies, finding perfect ones these days is challenging and all considered, this is a very nice example.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Undergraded at VG+ a copy that plays beautifully, but it does have some mainly light surface marks. hairlines and paper scuffs – these are ignored and sound quality is superb. Still an attractive visual copy and most are usually found in very poor shape with heavy spindle marks, deep scratches, fingermarks and dulled vinyl – this is light years above all that and although I rarely offer less than excellent, this is using the grading VG (Very Good) properly. Clean with fine shine, intense black and heavily pressed. Most of marks are fine and superficial, there lies the difference. If the music is more important than visual blemishes, this is could be the copy for you. I am certain it’s been played little but somewhat heavy-handely. Visually a fine 60s original mono record that should please many collectors, but not the discerning connoisseurs (for looks anyway).

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderfully unique record plays way above its very respectable grading with barely anything to fault, true. Strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and super-clean, unique to vinyl, mono, that sounds just perfect for its vintage. The mix quite different, as you would expect, to the stereo version. Any unwanted sounds are minimal indeed and little registered at all and few copies will play much better than this. I have heard examples with fewer marks than this sound far worse and that is the honest truth. This was a real pleasure to play-grade, I really love this album and it was a delight to hear with the original mono sound. Nothing spoiled my pleasure when play-grading this record. This copy could prove difficult to find better for sound, especially one pressed this early.

End Piece: A band musically more talented than given credit for and their music and satire broke new grounds here at the time – but not to everyone’s taste of course – they were a little crazy and eccentric and with the legendary Viv Stanshall in line-up who could be surprised? A clean-sounding record, a highly respectable original book and strongly attractive, if unusual cover, overall a fine all round copy and its one I can warmly recommend. Any doubts however, do not bid as I always state if the visuals are a little down.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
