Al Jackson. Al Jackson. Anyone who wants to be a drummer should know him and listen to this album to hear his amazing snare sound. While this album is one of the better ones in their catalog, it's also somewhat of a mixed bag. Ten of the eleven songs were knocked out in one day. That's almost unheard of these days with today's production standards, artists' egos, and simply, time and money. This shows what a well-oiled machine Booker T. & the MGs were and how creative and explosive the four of them had become. "The Beat Goes On" was recorded over three months before, and should I just say that ten songs would have been a nice even number. "I Can Dig It" is an uninteresting MGs original, and the title track sounds like it was done three years and three albums before this one. These three songs sound mediocre compared to what they were capable of, but as always, the superior musicianship, on "I Can Dig It" particularly, make them all worth listening to. This album features four top-notch covers that were included on the Time Is Tight box set. "Never My Love" and "Ode To Billie Joe", along with the wonderful "Expressway To Your Heart", featuring Jackson's unbelievable snare, and the tight as can be "You Don't Love Me". The surprises here are "The Exodus Song", which has a kind of "Hang 'Em High" like atmosphere, and also great, great versions of "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and a slowed down offering of one of my favorite Ray Charles songs, "Let's Go Get Stoned". The former features, again, terrific work by Jackson, and a Duck Dunn / Steve Cropper bass line that's incredibly infectious, and the latter featuring a vintage Cropper guitar solo that shows why people always remark on him being such an economical player. Everyone in this band had the key to soul - less is more. When the album is over, the listener will feel as if he or she has been surrounded by greatness. This is an overlooked gem in the spectacular catalog of Booker T. & the MGs.
(EXCERPT FROM AN ANONYMOUS ONLINE REVIEW)
This is the last of the great, classic, STAX soul instrumental albums Booker T & the MG's recorded for the legendary label. Following this one, Stax would terminate its distribution deal with Atlantic records and sign up with Gulf+Western, after which things would never be the same - for the performers AND for the label. Although Booker T's would go on to record many other, more commercially successful albums (some of which were truly great, such as 1971 "Melting Pot" album) the revolutionary phase of their input, during which they mixed funk, jazz, R&B, soul and organ swing in a seamless mix, and provided backbone to a slew of Blues and Soul artists pretty much ended with this album. Starting with the next album, Booker T's switched to a much more commercial, poppy sound and focused almost completely on doing covers of other people's tunes. Track listing: I CAN DIG IT - Expressway (to your heart) - Doin' our thing - You don't love me - Neve! r my love - Exodus song - The beat goes on - Ode to Billie Joe - Blue on Green - You keep me hangin' on - Let's go get stoned.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT, STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Back cover has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting)
- Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
