Strange LP, a must-have for both Stax and Sun vinyl collectors, including 4 original Sun sides (Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich, Bill Justis and Thomas Wayne) and 8 Stax ones, Nick Charles' one being found only on this record. The record is "produced by Nick Charles" himself. Curiously, there is not even a copyright notice or aknowledgement for the Sun tracks.

One must know that, at the beginning, Jim Stewart (Stax founder) was greatly impressed by the success of Sam Phillips' Sun Records label and he probably had the desire to follow his steps. It is likely that he "did himself a favor" with this LP as there were already enough Stax hit records issued in 1964 to fill one LP. For example, it misses "The Dog" by Rufus Thomas.

All the other tracks are the single takes, William Bell's "Any Other Way" being very different (and much better) than the "Soul Of A Bell" LP take, re-recorded several years later with different musicians.

This album has the same song selections as Stax # 702 various artists album, although they are not in the same order and the covers are dramatically different.

 (IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD++ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(d)          Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

·       COVER

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

-        Cover has a small quality control (inspection) stamp on the back panel

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2   (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.  (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has a visible wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
