2006/11/18, live at earthdom, tokyo. hier haut erwartungsgemäß schon mal die verpackung aufs auge: die southernlord version als aufklapp-lp-style-cover mit namenszug als stanzung, porträtbedruckten innentaschen und natürlich aus metallzäher pappe (japan version mit definitiv anderem artwork, details).

kommt das visuelle aus dem stand auf die 12, bleibt das hörbare erst mal, understatement-mässig, bei boris weiss mann + frau ja schließlich, was früher oder später unausweichlich kommen muss - und bei boris mit merzbow doppelt (mindestens) -  ganz schön ruhig; aber "feedbacker", stück #1, hier 35.05 minuten, bietet da ja auch genug spielraum für die persönliche chaostheorie in sound. "black out" und "evil stack", durch merzbows digital feedbacks und oszillationen direkt mit "feedbacker" verbunden, erweitern den chaosraum noch, erstaunlicherweise ohne spannung zu verlieren, 3+1=1 ganzes (als musikmathematisches ergebnis, quasi). interessant dann auf der #4, "rainbow", das von wata gesungene "indie"-stück mit merzbows beiträgen als luftig im soundkosmos herumstreifende irritationsfetzen, leise reibung, song bleibt song, merzbow als das verbindende element zum chaos vorab.

boris with merzbow rock dream dann tatsächlich der "rock dream" mit "pink" als starter, in der vorliegenden version mit zusätzlicher "laptop-digital-gitarre"; will sagen: merzbow in der rolle eines soundmässig völlig durchgeknallten zusätzlichen gitarristen: gerade noch songdienlich, aber höchst bedacht, die eigene rolle herauszustellen. dann "woman on the screen", "nothing special" und "ibitsu" als volle bretter und das "gitarren"-duell zwischen wata und merzbow auf letzterem kommt hier so richtig nach vorn, dann das rare "a bao qu" und - endlich -  ein ausflug in richtung der "dronevil" ("the evilone which sobs") und die intensive verzahnung als mögliche interpretation des bei dieser vö konzeptuell intendierten parallelhörens (höhepunkt, mindestens!). und spätestens bei "just abandoned my-self" wird dichte ein x-tes mal neu definiert. "farewell" als rausschmeisser, versöhnlicher, am original, merzbows beitrag als songdienliche dimensionserweiterung (und eben wirklich das!).

Rock Dream is a collaborative live album between Merzbow (Japanese noise musician Masami Akita) and Japanese experimental doom  band Boris.

The release consists of material recorded at a live show from 2006 entitled "Boris with Merzbow Oneman". The Southern Lord version has a die cut cover and is limited to 5000 (machine numbered). "Flower Sun Rain" is a cover of the Japanese super-group PYG. The vinyl version contains the bonus track "Dyno-Saur" which is not available on the CD version. According to Southern Lord, a little over 3800 were pressed. Southern Lord carried the black vinyl version (limited to 1000) through their mailorder. There are also 1000 on red vinyl and 1000 on purple vinyl. The other colors of the remaining 800 include marble orange.

Boris themselves have utterly left behind their Melvins trappings. They still riff loud and strong, and there is always a brilliant interlock between the guitars and drums. However, now it has such a panoramic spectrum of color to it. Instead of writing about every track, I'd like to discuss my favorite.

This howling groan-like din starts "The Evilone Which Sobs" running and doesn't let up through most of the track. The guitars strum single lines, leaving space, then heavy melancholy chords. Wata solos a bit, then the drums come crashing in. Truly one of the heaviest things I've ever heard. At times, when Merzbow's skronk changes in pitch, it truly seems like a palpable thing. Like something screaming, cursing the Universe itself for bringing it into being. I myself picture a death-shrouded figure standing in a wasteland, its' skull face howling. Forgive me if that sounds morbid. It's just the picture it put in my head. That is a sign of good music to me.

This is also a good album for those curious about Merzbow to check out. I owned about three of his CDs before getting this (so I have a bit of an ear for it), but he has a different approach with Boris. He knows when to assert himself and when to lie low. At times he is a howling counterpoint to the guitars, or a solo voice, sometimes bouncing around the edges of the mix like a skittering demon. At other times, he's down in the mix, shrieking away ominously. This is truly him playing cohesively with a group. And that's a hard thing for some noise artists to pull off. I would say this album is even a better collaboration than Merzbow's album with Sunn O))), "Flight of the Behemoth". That was basically him remixing and mutating Sunn O))) tracks.

Something should truly be said for the recording and engineering of this. To be able to capture a live sound this dense and textural, without resulting in formless blobs of sound, is amazing. The guitars are recorded phenomenally. Though at times, it's too bad there is no audience sound. I'm curious to see what people would be able to do in response to something like "Feedbacker". Think about it, you've just been utterly overcome by 35+ minutes of brain-shredding, cloud-parting beauty. It wouldn't surprise me if they were sweaty masses pounded flat into the ground.

This is the jewel in my Southern Lord collection.

Seriously, if you are a fan of this kind of music and the price is reasonable (it being a rarer limited edition release), BUY IT!!!!!!
