David Boulter, longtime keyboardist with Tindersticks, returns to Clay Pipe Music with the mini-album Whitby, shaped by a first visit to the North Yorkshire coast in summer 2024. Unlike the familiar seaside towns of his youth, Whitby struck him as strange and elemental: a near-empty beach between Sandsend and the ruins of the Abbey; harsh light glinting off rocks; stormclouds and sudden sun. The trip was a sort of creative cumulo-stimulus, with field recordings stacked on top of field recordings, then soon replaced by instrumental sketches leaning on and into the surrounding elemental drama. Despite the humble English locale, Boulter came face-to-face with hardy facts of life: remoteness, extinction, survival, and a smouldering primeval spirit, all of which ideas condensed into the held-to-mind motif of the whalebone arch on Whitby hill.
