Willem Breuker "Baal Brecht Breuker" LP issued by BV Haast Records (BVHAAST 003) in Holland, 1973. This disc contains music written by Dutch composer/band-leader Willem Breuker for a stage productions: "Bertold Brecht's + Baal". Recorded in 1973-1974, right around the time of the formulation of his highly successful Kollektief, it represents some of his finest music for theater, and points in the direction that the Kollektief would take in years to come. The ensemble utilized for "Baal Brecht", in fact, contains future members of the Kollektief and structurally resembles it somewhat, albeit with the inclusion of several instruments not normally in the later group's arsenal like mandolin and organ. It's a superb band, however, including composer Louis Andriessen on keyboards and longtime associate drummer Han Bennink, whose hilarious tap dance on "Evelien Roe" is one of the disc's many highlights. Breuker's penchant for borrowing from diverse musical sources is strongly in evidence here; there are tangos, worker's songs, bouzoukis, funk, mock-baroque, and more, all performed within a jazz ambience. Unlike similar purloining from his work in the '80s and '90s, there is still a freshness and sense of true irreverence at this point in his career (as opposed to a cynical malaise), presenting an aural picture of an extremely mischievous kid in a musical candy store and allowing this cultural thievery to work beautifully. Breuker's arrangements are rich and dramatic, his melodies beguiling. Serious fans of the Kollektief group will greatly enjoy hearing this little-known session where the seeds have definitely been planted. Breuker's great talent for arranging is strikingly clear; the voicings sound at once precise and unusual, rarely settling in any one place for an extended time. In fact, his habit of genre jumping within single compositions presages John Zorn's collage techniques by a good decade.
