Brief Info: Something of a cult figure within the folk genre. Bridget St John has a fairly limited vocal range and soft voice and I have in the past compared her to a female Nick Drake. But highly expressive and her music becomes addictive with repeated listens. This was her second album on John Peel’s independent Dandelion label – a label he formed to allow lesser-known acts the chance to perform and would have possibly struggled to secure a contract elsewhere. Few on it sold well including this. An album of mainly self-written songs with a Donovan and John Martyn song included. Delicate folk and quality material, her albums are quite sort after and never easily found this clean. I rate this lady highly and for fans of Drake, I feel sure St John will also appeal. Indeed she was deemed the favourite female singer by the late, great John Peel who gave her the chance to record her wonderful music. This one beautifully produced by Ron Geesin – famed for producing Pink Floyd’s ‘Atom Heart Mother’ – and including the talent of fellow folk artist John Martyn – with added strings and winds, it skillfully blends pop with baroque-style folk. For extra good measure, this is beautifully packaged with a de luxe leather-like texturing of the gatefold cover that has gorgeous artwork. However this is as delicate as the music and seldom seen this neat.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt textured surfaces inside and out. It almost has the look and feel of a quality leather and is highly delicate and wear-prone. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A difficult cover to say the least being predominately black on the outside and unprotected. This front has little to fault in terms of rubbing with any traces very small and equally light. Barely any creasing and no sticker issues. Just a small rub on the bottom left corner tip. Clean, fresh and attractive and few will be seen with less rubbing than this, the graphic of St John with collie dog looks fantastic (on both sides).

Cover Back: Near identical, but even better and without any ringwear, which is very unusual on this one. The detail on the surface texturing is truly superb and has to be seen for real and up close to be fully appreciated. The lack of rubbing or creasing to the fairly soft card means both front and back will prove beyond difficult to find better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Pristine, this looks fantastic with the song lyrics printed atop wonderful artistic graphics.

Top Edges: A little light patchy rubbing, both straight and flush.

Bottom Edges: Slightly more rubbing than above, mainly on the front, but in context for these storage edges, only light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with minimal traces of wear, any thickening or burring tiny as seen more critically viewed end-on, but hardly any at all really. Record enters on the back edge, the front being closed, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine on a cover like this. Solid, straight with barely any compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is fully present and unworn with hardly any rubbing at all, even to the fold hinges, that rarely seen on this and similar fragile covers.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone and unforgiving early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This exceptional and seldom-seen sleeve should please many, if not most collectors – a challenging one in impressive all-round condition.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): only marked down for a little natural darkening and mild ageing that few can hope to avoid as a minimum. An unlined inner with two pristine window circles, hardly any creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and arguably even better. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface traces bordering on minuscule and faint – even finer than hairlines seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. This scarce and elusive Dandelion record will seldom be found like this or better, this appears hardly handled or used. Visually an impressive record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic record and album plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and very infrequent and this is an exceptional clean pressing for what is quite a difficult album. No tracking issues* and beautifully recorded and produced by Ron Geesin. That lovely tone vocal sounding magnificently ‘warm’ and detailed on this quality recording. Being quite a delicate and quiet album, the odd minor blemish is near impossible to avoid on a 44-year-old record, but few copies will match, let alone outperform this very first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. John Peel was absolutely correct, this lady is very special indeed and no wonder he was so fond of her music. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
