Label/Format: BBC Records (possibly pressed by Pye?), with matt, textured surface and a very heavy pressing like the early Island records (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few spindle marks on side two (one long), but these are fine and hardly show with normal viewing. Incredibly, side one has barely a trace at all. These label finishes are quite unusual and look a little like orange peel (which I guess is appropriate), I do not think I have seen a matching pattern on any other record.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Top Gear was a BBC radio show that was initially, and briefly broadcast in the mid-1960s to compete with the pirate radio stations around at the time. It was revived in 1967 and into the mid-1970s as a progressive music station by DJs John Peel, Tommy Vance and Pete Drummond. It specialised in new and alternative acts of the time with many sessions recorded, the show proved popular with younger listeners of the time. It was axed in 1975 when the BBC had to save money. This scarce album features several songs by collectable artists including Bridget St John (FOUR brilliant songs) and avant garde tracks by Ron Geesin and White Noise – superb experimental music with the magnificent folk voice of St John. On the cover notes, Peel states St John, along with Sandy Denny are his favourite female singers ever. Historically an important set and not seen often, an essential album for fans of very alternative music, the trademark of the very sadly missed John Peel, this a lovely copy, the record especially. Although some of the songs were issued on regular albums, I feel sure all the tracks included here are unique versions with most unavailable elsewhere. This a rare chance to see this album along with John Peel’s Dandelion sampler ‘There is Some Fun Going Forward:’ for sale at the same time by one seller.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: Little apparent – maybe just the odd tiny spine tip-in.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): mainly due to rubbing on the bottom storage edge. A fully laminated single format cover. Printed and made in England by E. J. Day.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate retains a respectable shine, decent freshness and clarity, but does show some outer and inner (label area) rim fulling seen under light. With such a thick heavy record inside all these years, that is no real surprise. There are a few creases, but these are mainly small and light and largely confined to the very edges. No peeling and any lifting tiny and little. So there are polite hints of age and handling, but when viewed normally full-on, this is still an attractive sleeve. Great fish-eye picture of the great man on the back, and I have photographed the back text blub that can be read using the new Ebay magnifier which as an occasional buyer myself, I have found very useful.

Top Edge: Made thin, but practically unworn and straight.

Bottom Edge: Again thin but this more vulnerable storage edge has moderate rubbing especially at the ends. There are no splits.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge, both front and back have the matt strips that are quite wide where the laminate ends naturally short of full width. This vulnerable details have minimal hints of rubbing and are still neat.

Spine and Text: The spine is very impressive apart from the final bottom inch that has rubbed. But the good news is, ALL the text is unaffected and fully present. Solid, again made thin but still straight with any compression light.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing on the bottom pair that matches the edge with reasonably fine shape. The top ones have nothing more than tiny tip rubs and they retain very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A strong of this quite fragile late 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better – this album does not surface often anyway. Just enough to remind of it’s significant age, so not for the perfectionists of course. But as can be seen in the pictures, this is a still a highly respectable example and it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: only marked down for corner creasing. Many collectors did this on purpose to stop the record falling out. A plain white polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Overall, clean, still quite fresh with two immaculate window circles and clear, barely crinkled lining. Very little discolouration and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and I think even the extra (+) merited being honest. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and heavy pressed – all very similar to the early Island records with deeply punched matrixes (details seen further up). A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks tiny, very few and faint even as seen viewed critically under bright angled light. I doubt if this rare record has hardly been played and visually a superb record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This is a brilliant album with unique tracks and wonderful progressive and folk music. This is no sampler album, it is a real insight into what John Peel was into at the time and I think a really important historical piece. It plays to up, and most all even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and infrequent, that this is quite a challenging record with some quiet passages, especially the treated voice of Peel at the very beginning – a little gentle crackle or the odd click here is very hard to avoid totally. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure – that said, was this record ever pressed more than once? – it certainly was no major seller. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and appears carefully and lightly handled. The cover may show a little storage/handling wear, but the record I feel sure has made few trips outside. Little of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, now my second ever copy. The record especially will prove very difficult to find significantly better, and unless absolute silence is mandatory (and good luck with that), it is strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
