All my records are sent in boxes and the price of them has increased over time and these are my first price increases for nearly 10 years. Royal Mail prices have also gone up again. I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Liberty, original black format with matt, quite smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Side one has faint name mark that appears to have been rubbed to remove it. This has rubbed a tiny piece of the border and black from the top of the Liberty logo. The pink writing on the white area of the logo, so ink has been removed there, so only a relative light blemish as such. The good news is both are very clean, fresh attractive with just one fine faint spindle mark on side one and I can see none on side two at all. This record appears hardly played and sounds superb.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Brief Info: Brinsley Schwarz, so-named after their guitarist, were one of the earliest exponents of ‘pub rock’. A genre formed in the early 1970s by bands who performed their music live in public houses, clubs and smaller venues. They specialised in roots rock and had a dislike of glamour, high-tech and flashy bands or venues, and even labels as few of them were interested in this style of music – clearly, Liberty/United Artists were an exception. The bands dressed deliberately scruffy and had a fairly aggressive look and attitude – it proved a catalyst for the punk bands that emerged around 1976. Pub rock itself survived into the mid-70s before largely disappearing. Nick Lowe later gained fame as one of the earliest acts on Stiff Records at the time of the punk era into the second half of the 1970s. This was Brinsley Schwarz’s second album and has a very distinctive country-rock vibe. Impressive, but hardly a major seller and not seen often. This a superb original (bar the relatively minor label flaw), and even includes its original company ‘Jumbo’ price sticker in both pre-decimal and the new decimal currency, this seen inside the gatefold cover at the top, seen more clearly in close-up. The first copy of this one I have had to offer and it plays great throughout.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A gatefold format with the front and back laminated, the inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes original pre-decimal price sticker inside the gatefold. Also the white inner sleeve.

Lamination – Front & Back: A beautiful colourful cover and seen to near maximum advantage under shiny, fresh and clear laminate that has minimal creasing or dulling. There is a faint price press mark near the top right front seen under light where it appears to have been sold second-hand sometime in the distant past, but a mere blemish and hardly registers. Any lifting is only small and few: a tiny one on the front bottom right corner tip, and one on each back corner bar the bottom left, these a little bigger, but still only relatively small. Little detracts from the lovely graphic that is vivid and deeply coloured, it will seldom be seen much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside bar a light trace of set-off on the left from the deep magenta price sticker where it rests when closed. Of course, I have no idea if the sticker was placed there from new, or it was removed from the outer surface and placed inside by its original owner. Either way, it’s a very nice piece to keep as it shows its original price of 45/- (shillings) that converted to £2.25 in the new decimal currency introduced in February 1971 which dates this album and copy perfectly. This is a detail you will rarely seen on this, or any album.

Top Edges: Both quite straight, smooth and near flat with no wear at all.

Bottom Edges: As above, better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is still sharp and closed, factory cut in manufacture. The entrance edges are also impressively sharp with any thickening traces minuscule.

Spine and Text: A superb spine with barely anything to fault bar a hint to gentle tilt to right. Solid, thick and straight with barely a trace of compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and near parallel. The text is unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate with no fading of the artwork.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape largely retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this seldom-seen early 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive colourful item should please many collectors, and the Jumbo pre-decimal price sticker an authentic small historic bonus.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A plain solid white unlined inner with the ‘PATENT NO. 1,125,555,’ text. Any discolouration or creasing only light and all edge folds naturally intact.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: but better in real terms. Some light faint ‘brush’ marks seen under light on a small part of the run-in do nothing whatsoever, and I am certain from manufacture as I can think of no way these could appear by usage. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks very few, light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarce album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Any mild surface marks purely superficial and non-sounding*. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
