WHAT IS THE MARY BIRD PERKINS CANCER RESEARCH CENTRE ABOUT?
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center is a freestanding, community-owned, not-for-profit cancer treatment, education and research facility with locations in Baton Rouge, Hammond and Covington, Louisiana. The mission of Mary Bird Perkins is to provide high-quality treatment technology and compassionate support services to all patients and their families. The center reaches out to the community through its programs of public and professional education, and offers patients access to local and national cancer research trials. Founded in 1968 by a group of radiologists and community leaders, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center was established in response to the significant need for an independent community cancer treatment facility in the Baton Rouge area. The Center began treating patients in 1971. To meet the needs of those without nearby access to radiation treatment in the Hammond area, a second MBPCC facility was opened there in 1988. To address the growing needs of the Northshore community, MBPCC opened a radiation treatment facility in Covington, Louisiana in 1998.
