Hard to find, but cut by young and ambitious (and still in love) Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham less than two years before joining Fleetwood Mac, this lonely album , worth putting on the turntable and digging into. There are several CD versions out there, but don't be fooled as they were definitely burned from vinyl copies. There was some serious talk of a re-release at a very lucrative Mac reunion in 1997, but apparently it was just talk. Given what the duo would later achieve, Buckingham Nicks was a compelling listen, a sort of testing ground for both the artist's songwriting skills and Buckingham's skills as an aspiring studio handyman. It worked. It was a good summary for Fleetwood Mac, who re-recorded the beautifully lucid "Crystal" when the duo joined them on their 1975 self-titled comeback album. The energetic rockabilly of "Don't Let Me Down Again" remained a staple of the band's concert sets well into the 1980s, with crisp, ringing acoustic guitars and floor-swapping rhythm sections (Waddy Wachtel, Jim Keltner, featuring the talents of Jerry Scheff) assembled the pair's songs in a sound similar to FM-enabled folk rock. Lesser-known tracks like Nicks' brilliant opening "Crying in the Night" and Buckingham's loneliness lament "Without a Leg to Stand On" rivaled his later smash hits. At the same time, the misogyny of Buckingham's "Lola, My Love" is eye-catching, and the orchestral overtones of "Frozen Love" show that the two took each other a little too far. However, the Buckingham Knicks froze and the pair lost their contract with Polydor. But, of course, 1975 turned out to be one of the better years for them.
