This 1959 release was the fifth and final entry in the "Amazing Bud Powell" series of releases by the Blue Note label. Recorded in December 1958, the album's title references the generational change that Powell was witnessing in the jazz world and is represented by his young son's appearance on the front cover. The set consists of nine original compositions by Powell who presents the tunes in trio format with bassist Paul Chambers and Art Taylor.

Each of the pieces are interesting compositions and showcase something slightly different in Powell's repertoire. There are of course the requisite blazingly fast bop tunes, like "Cleopatra's Dream", "Down With It," or "Crossin' the Channel," but there is also short stride-influenced "Borderick," and the Afro-Cuban inflected "Comin' Up." There are also a few more medium-up swingers (including the title track) but the one thing that's missing from the album is a real ballad.

Powell's improvisations still show flashes of his brilliance, but its clear on this recording that his hospitalizations and various treatments for schizophrenia had taken their toll on his technique. In the faster bop numbers, (especially Cleopatra's Dream and Crossin' the Channel) you can hear the genius of his phrasing, and his seemingly effortless ability to construct complex, yet logical melodic ideas, yet often these great moments are slightly marred by sloppy fingering and a shaky sense of time. In fact, the highlight of the album is "Comin' Up," where the simplicity of the composition works in Powell's favor as he plays simple, more rhythmically interesting melodic ideas. Chambers and Taylor are perfectly comfortable in the boppish trio setting and you won't find many faults in their playing. Chambers even contributes some very good solos.

The album is a fine display of Powell's compositional talents, but unfortunately his playing will be somewhat disappointing for those who have heard the brilliance of his earlier recordings. As with just about any Powell recording, there are still plenty of great moments to be heard here and despite the inconsistency, the album is certainly worth hearing, both for those standout moments and for Powell's interesting and varied compositions.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, JUST A NOTCH BELOW NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(c)             The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(d)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split top seam (between 4 and 6 inches  / 10 to 15 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the upper seam

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

-        Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam and spine (nothing significant)

-        Cover has a minor  wrinkle (crease) in the cardboard base on the front panel

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)
