EXTRAORDINARY!
Music is, without question, alive and well at Opus3 in Sweden.
Fact is, right from the start, they, like the classic recordists in the fifties, exercise stereo recording to capture an acoustic, rather than any particular instrument within it. The end results, I must tell you, are exceptional. The very kind of exceptional that has the hair on your arm standing in the listening. (Yes, it's that good.)
This edition of BUDDY BOLDEN STOMP is a jazz disc, to be sure, recorded in a rather warm acoustic, with leading soloists Tomas Ornberg on soprano sax and Bent Persson on trumpet and cornet. (The rest of the band is a piano, Sousaphone, bass, and banjo.)
What unfolds, I tell you, is a tribute to Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet in tunes the likes of MEAN BLUES, BIRMINGHAM BERTHA, OF ALL THE WRONGS YOU'VE DONE TO ME, THE HOT TAMALE MAN, GEORGIA CABIN, and OH DADDY BLUES, among others. (Tunes from Armstrong and Bechet's vibrant younger days.)
Great stuff, that will have you "looking" for the players in your listening room, I kid you not.
Cover of this copy is like new, as is the disc. Near mint and better in the playing.
