It's BUDDY HOLLY week! So, let's end things with a bang! You are bidding on a 1954 (or "Nineteen Hundred Fifty-Four", as they called it back then), Lubbock, Texas High School "Westerner" yearbook . It contains photos of Buddy Holly (correct spelling, "HOLLEY"), Buddy's cutie-pie girlfriend of many years, Echo McGuire (look at that smile! pretty great name, huh? ECHO. Why don't more people name their baby girls "ECHO" nowadays?), Buddy's longtime friend/schoolmate and fellow songwriter Bob Montgomery ("Heartbeat", "Wishing", "Love's Made A Fool of You", later covered by The Bobby Fuller Four), and Crickets drummer Jerry Allison. Of the three Lubbock High yearbooks with Buddy in them, 1953, 1954 and 1955, this is the best one to have because of all the others in it as well. This book formerly belonged to Sandra Crouch, or "crutch" to her friends, and by the looks of allll the many, MANY dedications and signatures in this, she was a VERY popular girl. It appears the only four people that DIDN'T sign this book are Buddy, Bob, Echo and Jerry. I'm still looking to see if they're in here...somewhere. Hard to tell.      The overall condition of this book is a strong Very Good +. Very nice overall appearance. Cover is smooth. Sharp corners with only very slight lower corner dings. The spine and overall coloring is very nice. NO rips, tears or major damage. NO ripped or cut out/missing pages or tape anywhere. Medium overall age to the pages, which would be expected of a printed item almost 72 years old. They didn't use acid free paper back then so... However, this book does have two issues. First, it appears this was on a bookshelf or in a box for a long time. There is a light, green stain on part of the back cover. I'm sure from the front of a book it was next to for many years. This is pretty light but still visible on the back, right side and at the bottom. I thought the impression looked familiar, so I looked through my other Buddy Holly yearbooks and the mark is definitely from the front of the 1953 Westerner yearbook. Although, I have no idea why the stain is green since the front of the 1953 yearbook is brown with gold lettering. Apparently, the gold lettering from the 1953 book, next to this one on the shelf, aged over time. Next, many years ago, something was spilled near this book. Maybe chocolate milk or coffee. You can see a splash stain at the top of the pages near the top corners. Also, there are some upper corner stains at the beginning few pages as well as the last few pages, mostly pages 318-323. There are a few small edge stains, but nothing as severe as at the top of pages 322 & 323 (see photo). No big stains to any of the students' photos and nothing even close to the main people listed above. NO stains, other than what's been listed, or anything detrimental to the outer covering, which is in nice, smooth, clean condition. Whatever was spilled, was wiped clean off the cover. Overall, a nice yearbook in pretty clean shape.       After all the students, faculty, and students' activities like band, choir and sports, there are ads for local businesses like clothing stores, car dealerships (check out the cool old cars) and restaurants with prices that are pretty funny nowadays. If I could eat at that Reagan's Mexican food place for those prices now, I'd NEVER eat at home. ("Closed all day Sunday"! What?!). After the ads, there is a student directory listing everyone. You can look up Buddy, Bob, Echo (love that name!), Jerry and even former book owner Sandra Crouch. She was all over the place! Like I said, she was VERY popular. Buddy and Echo are in the Christmas Senior A Cappella choir on pages 146 & 147. Jerry is in the band on page 151 playing drums, of course. And, Bob is playing guitar at the "Westerner Round-Up" on page 138. They're all be gone now, but they're here, alive and well, back then in this book.       Also included in this auction, is an 8"X10", color REPRINT/COPY of Buddy's full sized yearbook photo. In the yearbook, you only get headshots of each student. Some years ago, I came across someone that had the actual negative from Buddy's yearbook photo. I don't know where he got that from. I was able to get a print from that negative. A crisp and clear, full-sized photo of Buddy wearing, what I'll bet, was a brand-new shirt for the special photo occasion. The print I have is in black & white, but I made a color copy of it so it has a real, print look to it instead of just a plain, regular B&W copy. The copy you'll get is what's shown in the auction. Pretty nice indeed! In all my years of collecting Buddy Holly, I've NEVER seen this lovely, full-sized photo of him in any book or article. I think you'll be happy with your purchase of this item. It's BUDDY HOLLY week! Check out my other listings.
