Description
This is a 10" white-label 78 rpm acetate of "Words of Love" by Buddy Holly, which appeared on Coral 61852. The label has Buddy's name and the song title written in pencil. The title has quotation marks around "Words," which makes it look much different from the way the song was issued. The number 62599 is written in pencil on the label. There are no matrix numbers, just the number 3 written twice on the runoff. The reverse side is very interesting. The acetate is uncut on this side except for the first 40 seconds. There's a large X drawn across the whole surface, and the 2 words "DON'T USE" are written along the edge over the grooves. This segment has Buddy's guitar intro, the first verse, and part of the second; it breaks down soon after Buddy sings the line, "Darling I love you". This side sounds to me like it might have been a different take: Buddy's guitar sounds different from the way it does on the other side, like it's not quite in tune. The acetate is graded E both visually and aurally, looks beautiful, sounds fantastic.
On Mar-15-06 at 17:45:54 PST, seller added the following information: I have listened again to the 40-second segment on the reverse side of the acetate, and have come to the conclusion that it's not an alternate take, it's the same as what's on the issued record and on the front side of the acetate. The distortions I was hearing in Buddy's guitar at the beginning of the segment were probably the result of an error in the acetate machine.
