The debut album by the Crickets and the only one featuring Buddy Holly released during his lifetime, The "Chirping" Crickets contains the group's number one single "That'll Be the Day" and its Top Ten hit "Oh, Boy!." Other Crickets classics include "Not Fade Away," "Maybe Baby," and "I'm Looking for Someone to Love." The rest of the 12 tracks are not up to the standard set by those five, but those five are among the best rock & roll songs of the 1950s or ever, making this one of the most significant album debuts in rock & roll history, ranking with Elvis Presley and Meet the Beatles.

(EXCERPT FROM AN ONLINE REVIEW BY WILLIAM RUHLMAN, ALL MUSIC GUIDE  /ALLMUSIC.COM/)

For its extraordinary contribution to the modern music, superb production, craftsmanship, fine musicianship, revolutionary significance and influence it exerted on numerous generations of musicians, writers and general public, or for some other innate quality, this album was voted one of top-200 albums of all time in one of the largest poll of critics, music reviewers, professionals and producers ever organized: the poll, which was conducted by Paul Gambaccini, legendary BBC Radio A&R man, surveyed more than 50 top music professionals (including Roy Carr, Jonathan Cott, Robert Christgau, Cameron Crowe, Chet Flippo, Ben Fong-Torres, Charlie Gillett, Greil Marcus, Murray the K., Lenny Kaye, Bruce Morrow (a/k/a "Cousin Brucie"), Tim Rice (of "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Evita" fame), Lisa Robinson, Robert Shelton (who wrote liner notes for Bob Dylan's first album), Ed Ward, Joel Whitburn, Pete Wingfield, etc.). For more details, see: "Critics Choice: Top-200 albums" compiled by Paul Gambaccini, Omnibus Press, Library of Congress Catalog No.7855565 (or ►click here  for the complete album listing).

THE BLUE LABEL PROMO, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed to the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals": the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+ . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 15:1.

(d)            Blue Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(e)             Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS ONLY ABOUT GOOD+ (G+).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        A visible water stain affects about 15% of the cover's surface (visible on both sides); there is no structural damage to the cardboard base, , however, the stain is visible and has caused some erosion in the firmness of the cover ,  visible yellowish discoloration, a few small peel-off marks and a slight warp in the affected area.

-         Cover has all three seams (top, bottom and spine) partially split (indeterminable lengths); All three split seams were delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape

-         Cover has some ring wear. On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 5.

-         The cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some  yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few  wrinkles along the seams

-         Cover has a visible "wrinkle"(crease)  in one of the corners.

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stickers or labels

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.

PLEASE NOTE A VERY IMPORTANT ADDITION AND AMENDMENT TO OUR AUCTION DESCRIPTION:

·       WE ARE UPGRADING THE CONDITION OF THE COVER (THE RECORD REMAINS THE SAME) FROM GOOD+ (G+) TO VERY GOOD++ (VG++). WE ARE DOING SO BECAUSE WE HAVE MANAGED TO FIND A NEW, MUCH BETTER COVER FOR THIS RARE BLUE LABEL PROMO AND WILL MATCH THE BETTER COVER WITH THE BETTER (BLUE LABEL PROMO) RECORD FOR A MUCH BETTER AND FAR SUPERIOR MATCH.

·       IN TERMS OF MARKINGS, AGE AND PROVENANCE, THE NEW AND IMPROVED COVER IS 100% IDENTICAL TO THE OLD ONE (ALL THE  MARKINGS ARE ABSOLUTELY THE SAME), BUT CLEARLY IN MUCH BETTER CONDITION THAN THE OLD ONE AND WITHOUT THE WATER DAMAGE SHOWN ON THE OLD COVER.

·       WE WILL NOT SHIP THE WATER-DAMAGED COVER SHOWN AMONG OUR ORIGINAL IMAGES FOR THIS ITEM, UNLESS THE WINNING BIDDER SPECIFICALLY SO REQUESTS. THE WINNING BIDDER CAN ALSO ELECT TO RECEIVE THE INFERIOR SECOND LP (ORIGINAL STOCK PRESSING ON MAROON MONO LABEL, WHICH CAME WITH THE BETTER COVER), BUT WE CAUTION THAT THE SECOND (STOCK) PRESSING IS CLEARLY IN SUBPAR CONDITION AND PROBABLY NOT SUITABLE FOR REPEATED PLAYING. PLEASE NOTE, IN SUCH CASE, THE POSTAGE WILL BE SLIGHTLY HIGHER (ANYWHERE FROM $1.00 TO $3.00, DEPENDING ON THE SHIPPING LOCATION).

·       BEING THAT THIS ITEM ALREADY RECEIVED BIDS AND EBAY WOULD NOT ALLOW US TO DELETE THE IMAGES OF THE OLD (WATER-STAINED) COVER AND REPLACE THEM WITH THE NEW (BETTER) COVER,  WE CAN ONLY SHOW BOTH SETS OF IMAGES TOGETHER, SIDE-BY-SIDE. TO AVOID ANY CONFUSION, PLEASE IGNORE THE IMAGES OF THE WATER-STAINED COVER AND VIEW ONLY THE NEWLY ADDED IMAGES OF THE BETTER COVER (THE LAST FOUR IMAGES IN OUR SEQUENCE OF PHOTOS, CLEARLY IDENTIFIABLE BY OUR TYPEWRITTEN NOTE)

·       THE FOLLOWING IS THE DETAILED GRADING AND DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW, BETTER COVER. PLEASE REPLACE THE ORIGINAL COVER DESCRIPTION WITH THE FOLLOWING ONE. AGAIN, THE CONDITION OF THE RECORD ITSELF REMAINS UNCHANGED.
