Description

Budgie : Squawk 1L/1L 1st Press Blue/Black MCA Label 1972
This very collectable first pressing plays to an incredible standard and easily qualifies as a FINAL UPGRADE album as there is just no interference on either side, not even a modicum of light static!  The clarity and depth is so impressive and whilst this has been played a few times it has retained all of its original sonic quality.  I cannot emphasise enough just how clear and precise the audio is and this is one of the easiest Mint grades I have ever given!  It goes without saying that the vinyl is visually stunning and 'as new' is not far off the mark.
The cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear and the poly-lined inner is also very clean with only minimal creasing.  It also one of the earliest first pressings as it has only a single stamper on each side.  A stunning 'package' for sure.

Visual grading
The vinyl is in beautiful condition and 'as new' is an honest description.  It has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen and has no marks or scratches and I can only detect a small number of very faint wispy hairlines on each side, they are not easy to locate!  It really is a stunning example and the blue/black 'hexagon' labels are also super clean with only a little spindle wear.
Play grading
The lead in on S1 is super clean so you are expecting good things from the audio!  And I am pleased to say 'Whisky River' plays with stunning quality from the first note to the last with no intrusion of any kind.  The clarity and power of the audio is equal to that of an un-played vinyl and Mint is very much deserved.  Even the fade out has no 'background'.
With complete silence in the dead wax 'Rocking Man' has just one barely audible dust tick on the intro and then plays with sublime quality.  The first 'silent' section is super clean with again just one dust tick and then the long instrumental is awesome!  It plays with a power and depth you so rarely find and there is just no 'background' to be heard.  This also applies to the rest of the track and again Mint is an honest appraisal of the audio.
'Rolling Home Again' is 'as new' with not even a dust tick.  The clarity is just on another level and this track is Mint from start to finish.
The acoustic 'Make Me Happy' is of the same 'high end' standard and I cannot overstate just how stunning the sonic quality is!  It plays as per a new vinyl and is Mint etc!
'Hot As A Docker's Armpit' provides more evidence of a beautifully preserved vinyl and plays with no sign of any interference.  So far this is one amazing album!  There are no ticks, clicks or pop and obviously no static.  The audio is so strong and deep and the clarity is again 'as new'.  The 'high octane' end section is outstanding and there is no distortion on the top end.  This is one of the easiest Mint grades I've ever had to give, what a version!
--------------------------------------------------------------------
'Drugstore Woman' continues this fine form and plays with imperious quality from the opening groove to the last.  Even the solo 'woman' vocal right at the end has no 'background'.  Mint
You will not be surprised to hear that the instrumental 'Bottled' has no 'background' of any kind.  Is this record really approaching 50 years old?!  Mint
The acoustic intro on 'Young Is A World' plays beautifully there is no other way to describe it.  The first vocal also has a clarity of sound that is exceptional and it proceeds in exactly the same way with no intrusion.  Bourge's first excursion is breathtaking - this album was produced 'loud' and you can certainly crank up the volume here with no fear of distortion.  The power, depth and warmth of the audio is stunning and is pure Mint audio from beginning to end, even during the many quieter sections.  As I often say I do not exaggerate my grading as one, I am honest and two, it would not be in my interests to do so :-)
The long intro on 'Stranded' is faultless as is Shelley's first vocal.  From that point on it plays with STUNNING precision and...no interference.  The 'heavy' mid instrumental is just phenomenal and just could not play any better.  The solo bass section that follows has no 'background' either and to the end this delivers on every level.  A Mint finish to this unbelievable album.
In summary this very collectable first pressing plays to a FINAL UPGRADE standard with no interference on either side.  A genuine time-warp classic that has no ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either.  It is rare for an album from this era to play with such precision and especially one that has been played.  There is some spindle wear albeit not very much and it just goes to show how carefully it has been looked after down the years.  You could not improve upon this audio!  I don't think it has the originality and depth of their classic debut album but it nonetheless plays with unrivalled quality on both sides.
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in excellent condition with only very minimal shelf wear.  It is often found in poor shape due to not being laminated there are not many negatives here.  The edges have hardly any rubbing and the thin pinched spine is also very clean.  The corners remain very strong and only the top two have a small amount of wear.  The opening edge is very near perfect with hardly any handling wear.  The front cover has no marking and has only a little creasing on the top half which you can only see when you hold it at a certain angle.  There are also some very faint crease lines next to the spine and along the top edge.  The back cover again is free of any marks and has only very minimal creasing.  This is easily one of the best Squawk covers that you will find today.
The poly-lined blue Stereo inner is in great condition with no side splits, tears or marking and only a little creasing.  It is dated 12-73 so I assume they were just a bit ahead of themselves on this one.
