Rarity: Fairly scarce, and seldom seen in better conditions due to the thin delicate cover and hardly played early Decca pressed copies never easy to find. The black label versions arguably the rarest with fewer made and only relatively briefly available.

Brief Info: The second album by the Welsh heavy rock trio Budgie. A band that never wanted to be classified as ‘progressive’, but often were. One of the least-seen in their catalogue, this a superb second pressing, still by Decca on the more elusive black MCA label. Also including another great cover design by Roger Dean, and possibly one of the least familiar or lauded. One hardly played and offering close to perfect sound bar half-a-dozen clicks – four of which are on the joining groove. A micro-mark, barely visible, but that the reason why a play-grade is essential. Overall, a superb copy and seldom seen as such.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or very close to). An unlaminated single format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England with very thin, flimsy card by The Decca Record company, includes the date-coded 1973 polylined Decca inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: Thin card, thick heavy record inside for around 45 years means few have much hope of avoiding fairly mild rim rubbing as the very least. The front has a fairly fine and light arc near the top fading to right – the back fine again towards top and to 9 o’clock position – any other rubbing again quite light near the inside seam areas top and bottom. Overall, amongst the least I have seen on this unforgiving, but classic Roger Dean design cover. Not one seen that often and seldom much better, the lack of creasing is certainly a significant plus as is the lack of fading or grubbiness.

Top Edge: Very thin, but straight with only a little rubbing at the ends.

Bottom Edge: As above, and being paler, the rubbing hardly shows.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with any thickening very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light. All text is perfect and unworn.

Corners: Any tip rubs small and light, very fine to near excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this wear-prone and quite fragile 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This attractive and dramatic Roger Dean designed cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Decca-style polylined inner date-coded 7-73 (July 1973) with two perfect window circles and the lining neat and still quite clear. Minimal creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs, the paper with only gently discolouration to politely remind of age. These quality inners were no longer available when the Decca runs came to end shortly after this particular pressing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy appearing very little used on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Just the one minute stylus mark that I had to locate using a magnifier when six clicks were heard as a song ended – so four on the joining groove, then two just as the new song began – then nothing, or any others heard at all. Viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault bar the aforementioned clicks mostly on a joining grooves – its fantastic apart. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing, but typical for Decca, with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this still very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing else bar those brief mostly joining groove clicks spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better with virtually all the music unblemished, so this can be strongly recommended, this not album that shows up often.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
