·       BUFFALO SPRINGFIELD – THE SAME-TITLED FIRST ALBUM - ATCO RECORDS ORIGINAL 1966 STEREO LP SD-33-200

·       ORIGINAL U.S. PRESSING

·       INSANELY RARE WITHDRAWN, FIRST STEREO PRESSING WITH THE SONG “BABY, DON’T SCOLD ME” INSTEAD OF A SUBSEQUENT HIT SINGLE “FOR WHAT IT’S WORTH”.

·       NOTE: ATCO  used TWO (2) different catalog numbers for this album: the first number is SD-33-200, which is found only on original, withdrawn version with “Baby don’t scold me” ; the second number SD-33-200-A was used on the more common version with “For what it’s worth” instead of “Baby don’t scold me” What we have here is the very first catalog number: SD-33-200.

·       MONSTROUSLY RARE STEREO PRESSING, MANY TIMES RARER THAN MONO

·       ORIGINAL 2-TONE (TAN AND PURPLE) ATCO STEREO LABEL

·       THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, AUTHENTIC, FIRST U.S. PRESSING; THIS IS NOT A REISSUE, AN IMPORT, OR A COUNTERFEIT PRESSING.

·       ORIGINAL, THICK CARDBOARD COVER (AMERICAN STYLE)

·       CLEAN, WEAR-FREE LABELS

·       THICK, HEAVY VINYL PRESSING

·       STEREO VERSION OF THE WITHDRAWN SONG (“BABY DON’T SCOLD ME”) HAS  NEVER BEEN AVAILABLE ON LEGITIMATE COMPACT DISC OR IN ANY OTHER WAY, MANNER OR FORMAT; THE RECENT RHINO/WARNER REISSUE CONTAINS ONLY THE MONO VERSION OF THE SONG. WE BELIEVE THAT ORIGINAL MULTI-TRACK SOURCE (MASTER TAPE) OF THIS SONG NO LONGER EXISTS AND WAS (PROBABLY) DESTROYED IN THE FIRE WHICH DESTROYED ATLANTIC’S MID-MANHATTAN STUDIOS IN THE EARLY 1970’s.

(PLEASE SEE THE IMAGE OF THE COVER, LABEL OR BOTH, SHOWN BELOW)

The band themselves were displeased with this record, feeling that the production did not capture their on-stage energy and excitement. Yet to most ears, this debut sounds pretty great, featuring some of their most melodic and accomplished songwriting and harmonies, delivered with a hard-rocking punch. "For What It's Worth" was the hit single, but there are several other equally stunning treasures. Stephen Stills' "Go and Say Goodbye" was a pioneering country-rock fusion; his "Sit Down I Think I Love You" was the band at their poppiest and most early Beatlesque; and his "Everybody's Wrong" and "Pay the Price" were tough rockers. Although Neil Young has only two lead vocals on the record (Richie Furay sang three other Young compositions), he's already a songwriter of great talent and enigmatic lyricism, particularly on "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," "Out of My Mind," and "Flying on the Ground Is Wrong." The entire album bursts with thrilling guitar and vocal interplay, with a bright exuberance that would tone down considerably by their second record.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Withdawn “Baby don’t scold me”  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its regular, stock counterpart. We estimate that withdrawn copies of this album outnumber “regular” (later) copies  by a ratio of at least 100:1.

(d)          IN ADDITION, stereo  pressing of this title (first version) is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 20:1 (this ratio refers to the ratio of  withdrawn stereo copies vs. withdrawn mono copies, NOT regular stereo copies vs. regular mono copies)

(e)           The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams.

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-         Cover has a partially split top seam (less than 1 inch / 2.5 centimeters)

-         Back cover has a small peel-off mark, probably from the careless removal of the price sticker.  (less than 1/8 square inch in size)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
