SPECIAL NOTE: This is not a top grading copy. As I pride myself in offering the best sounding records I can possibly find, I wish to make this very clear. Only the fact this is a fairly rare and collectable record, as well be being a true classic makes me feel obliged to offer it. When collections are purchased, sometimes a few items fall a little short of what I would normally buy when buying individual albums. Such is the case here. Although the labels are in super condition and they indicate only few plays, this one has marks. Most are ignored but a couple do sound. The first at the very beginning of side two. Only a small mark but quite deep. This has about 10 clicks but on my deck, no jumps, clearly an arm drop from the distant past. A much finer mark on ‘A Child’s Claim to Fame’ has some very fine ticks, most noticeable near the song’s end and on the joining groove. A few other one-off sporadic clicks were noted too, but not too many. Mostly, this plays very well but I do not offer records like this lightly or often. But there is always someone wanting lower grading, rarer classics, so I have no qualms in offering as I have clearly mentioned these issues. There are number of finer surface marks and paper scuffs too, but these are virtually all ignored. With a very decent cover and mostly still enjoyable audio, this will please many collectors, but clearly NOT the more discerning. Please do not bid unless you are sure this is an acceptable example for you. I cannot state clearer than this and I start my bidding at a very low price to let the market judge it’s worth.

Label Conditions: Both very clean and attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A small nick portion removal near the top of side two clearly a manufacture blemish.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Classic second album that still featured Neil Young prior to leaving. A wonderful set that sold in very poor numbers and went largely ignored, especially in the UK. This has always been a collectable and sort-after album, hence my slight trepidation on offering a copy in lower grading conditions. Again please refer to my Special Note above and if you have any doubts whatsoever, do not bid.

Cover Grade and Format: Excellent(-). A single format with a laminated front. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Lamination & Front: Not a lot to fault on this, the laminate is clean, clear and retains a fine shine with no lifting. Any dulling, which is fairly slight, is confined to the rim outline under light and any creasing very light and few. The artwork looks lovely and on it’s own, graded probably better than Excellent.

Cover Back: Little to fault here either, very mild traces of grubbiness or faint tone spots (but look hard). Mild surface rubs seen under light and no ringwear. Some fairly light burring on the top edge and corners but barely any creasing at all.

Top Edge: The end of the back panel has thickened and burred slightly mostly near the left corner.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear and very straight.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: The spine has rubbed, hence the lowering from a full Excellent grade. The very centre has moderate+ rubbing for around an inch but NO penetrating split through the card. Virtually all text has eroded which is hardly unusual on this vulnerable edge that has no laminate protection.

Corners: All have light to moderate tip rubs, all bar the spine top have retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very respectable all round example of this somewhat fragile late 60’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This never wear well, the edges are highly vulnerable and the card is thin. With the main faces e.g. the front and back, being so attractive, this should please many collectors, but clearly not the connoisseurs.

The Inner: This includes it’s Polydor-style polylined inner date coded 058. This has darkened with age with had little else to fault with the window being very neat and clear and all edges unsplit with barely any creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Sound: Good(++), A respectable visual copy but it has marks as mentioned above. One deep, but small mark at the very beginning of side two has around ten to a dozen clicks, some masked by the music, but I still counted them. This does NOT jump or stick on my LP12, the only turntable I listened to this on. I will never offer any record that sticks. Thereafter this immediate ‘trauma’ (bit harsh a word maybe), the rest of the side plays very well with little else unwanted. Side two has a fine mark on song two, this has very light and somewhat sporadic ticks, mostly gentle, a few more noticeable near the track’s end. Again, the majority of this side plays very well indeed with just the odd one-off tick or crackle trace as well as the aforementioned. There is NO distortion or groove-wear at all and the sound remains focused, clear and enjoyable. I could still enjoying this record for the vast majority of it’s duration. There are fine surface marks and the odd paper scuff, these are ignored as they usually are. Clearly the right copy for the right person, a compromise example without the expense of a top grader. The vast majority plays way above the visual grading with just the mainly brief clicks that will impair for the more sensitive listener. I can cautiously recommend this one, but for the last time, any doubts, DO NOT BID.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
