Rarity: The album itself is quite rare, it was not issued in the UK. As a Test Pressing very rare, and this includes the original gatefold cover, also the elusive poster/lyric insert sheet. Also includes has the original Phonogram pressing details dated 30/4/73 on a single sheet – all as seen in the picture. I doubt if many of these will even exist complete as a Test Pressing, especially outside Australia. A copy like this of an already rare Vertigo album goes even beyond that.

Brief Info: Buffalo are the only Vertigo band I know of to only get an Australia release only. Yes, the band are Australian and were the first band from that country to be signed by that label, this being their second album which most regarded as their very best. They played hard rock – blend Black Sabbath with Screaming Trees and you will be somewhere near. Indeed they supported Black Sabbath on their Australian tour of the time. A somewhat controversial band, their album covers especially so, they received scant promotion or airplay and folded in 1977. This is the first copy I have seen or heard, I found it very enjoyable, and in the heavy rock genre, still sounding fresh and powerful with somwhat grungy overtones. This super-rare Test Pressing includes the original gatefold cover, and equally rare poster lyric sheet and the company pressing details sheet. Overall, the record plays very well indeed, some fine marks on side two have a little brief sound which is mainly light and largely lost in the music. So this caused little loss of enjoyment whilst play-grading and was only light anyway – most of this record is very impressive. Certainly one for Vertigo collectors, but most rock fans will enjoy this somewhat ‘lost’ album that deserves greater exposure and recognition. It paved the way for more famous Australian acts like AC/DC that followed.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with quite smooth surfaces that have a gentle sheen. Printed and made in Australia. Includes the Phonogram pressing detail sheet and the super-rare poster lyric sheet.

Cover Front: Spectacular artwork which did not meet everyone’s taste back in the day. The front has minor rub traces and one fairly light corner crease (top right). Any marks or ageing minimal.

Cover Back: Similar again, a trace more rubbing being critical, just the slightest hint of rim rubbing, but I would strongly suggest, most will have a great more.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same mild crease as the front, little else really to fault.

Top Edges: Straight and flat, any rubbing little and mostly very light and patchy.

Bottom Edges: The front similar to above. The back appears to have a been enhanced by brown pen, but neatly, I suspect a split has been very neatly repaired also.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is closed, neat and sharp, also straight. Both back entrance edges are almost the same, a little minor thickening or burring seen viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Mostly solid and straight, but has compressed and flattened a little. Folded pretty square, so the edges meet up very closely together and near parallel. Any rubbing or chipping small and light, no text printed, the graphic which flows around mostly all present and still strong.

Corners: Light to moderate (and some inbetween) tip rubs, fine or better shape retained with any dinks small and light.

Cover Summary: An elusive Australian-only Vertigo cover in very respectable condition. Seldom seen or offered, especially here, one to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a white unlined inner with one window circle, original or not? – I do not know. Minimal ageing, no edge splits and hardly creased.

The Poster Sheet: EXCELLENT(++): a gatefold small poster and lyric insert in superb condition. Neatly folded in manufacture with only gentle hint of crinkle and no hard creases. Sharp edges, clean and fresh with more interesting artwork. Test Pressings often fail to have covers, so the inclusion of a rare insert as well is a major plus.

The Company Sheet: Hard to grade something like this, it appears to me pretty much as when made bar the tape on the sides which has aged and browned.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+) / EXCELLENT(–): only gentle and fine surface marks overall, except a small cluster of fine marks on side two. These are barely feelable but do have a little ‘crackly’ sound here-and-there, but only briefly, and most of lost in the loud music. For the briefest of time only, more evident on a short quiet segment. Still a fine visual copy that is clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Test Pressings are more often seen badly scratched, used and abused, often left stacked in factories, many discarded and destroyed. This has more than just ‘survived’, this is still a lovely rare record. Minus the aforementioned marks, this would be a beautiful copy, but in terms of sound, this still really delivers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Vertigo album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little more to fault than I have mentioned above. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any other surface sounds are minimal indeed and overall, an very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. I have never had this before, so comparing to a standard shop copy I cannot do. Not for purists, but little of any note spoiled an enjoyable play-grade. The music for most is loud and heavy, this carries a fair punch with most of those blemishes lost. So unless perfection is mandatory from a very rare Test Pressing, this should please many, if indeed most collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
