Description

This auction is for a complete set (all 10 LPs) of the BYG Records Rock Generation Series issued by BYG Records in France.

BYG Records was founded by Jacques Bisceglia, Jean-Luc Young and Jean Georgakarakos in the late 60's (hence the B Y G of the label's name). The now legendary status of BYG is mainly based on their free jazz and experimental records by mostly American artists released under the Actuel-series. However, near their beginning, they issued the Rock Generation Series in conjunction with Giorgio Gomelsky, the first manager of The Yardbirds and impressario of the early rock/R&B/blues scene in England.

For collectors of the early rock/R&B/blues scene, the BYG Rock Generation Series is one of the "holy grails" - extremely hard to find and the core of any serious collection. The Rock Generation Series documents some of the rarest and important music recorded in the early to mid 1960s in England. Some have been re-issued over the years but some have not, making this set all the more desireable. Issued in the early 1970s, the BYG Rock Generation Series quickly went out of print, with most of the production entering private collections, not to reappear on the market. I spent years assembling a complete set of these rare albums and now offer the complete set to one lucky bidder.

In considering my grading of the records and covers, I ask that you bear in mind that I grade very conservatively. As evidence, I ask you to look at my feedback.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 1 (BYG 529.701) This album consists of The Animals recorded live at The Club A Go Go in Newcastle-On-Tyne in December 1963 and The Yardbirds recorded live at The Marquee Club in London in March 1964. The cover and record are in near mint condition.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 2 (BYG 529.702) This album consists of the other half of The Yardbirds at The Marquee Club and The Animals at The Club A Go Go sets in Volume 1 above. The cover is in near mint condition. The record has one very minor surface scratch that I can see and some finger prints on it.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 3 (BYG 529.703) This album consists of Sonny Boy Williamson backed by The Animals at The Club A Go Go in Newcastle-On-Tyne in December 1963 and The Graham Bond Organisation at Klook's Kleek in October 1964. The cover is in near mint condition and the record is in very fine condition, with some minor surface scratches on side one and some finger prints.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 4 (BYG 529.704) This album contains the other half of the live sets by Sonny Boy Williamson backed by The Animals and The Graham Bond Organisation in Volume 3 above. The cover is in very fine condition and the record is in very good condition with some dirt on the last track of Sonny Boy Williamson and The Animals side that should go away with a proper cleaning (I don't have a record cleaning machine or I would have done it).

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 5 (BYG 529.705) This album contains tracks from the First R&B Festival held at Town Hall in Birmingham on 28th February 1964 and features sings by the Spencer Davis R&B Quartet (with a very young Steve Winwood), The Liverpool Roadrunners, Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry, and Sonny Boy Williams and The Yardbirds. The cover is in very fine condition with some barely observable dirt. The record is in very good condition with some surface scuffs and one very minor surface scratch.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 6 (BYG 529.706) This album contains demo recordings of The Steampacket, labelled the first "Supergroup", who consisted of Brian Auger, Rod Stewart and Julie Driscoll among others. The recordings were made by Giorgio Gomelsky in December 1965 as a demo that he took to the US in hopes of organizing a college tour for them. The cover is in very good condition with some observeable surface dirt. The record is in good condition with some minor scuffing and some scratches, primarily on track 1 of side 2 (I suspect these may be audible).

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 7 (BYG 529.707) This album contains music by Gary Farr & The T-Bones and demos by the original Soft Machine. The cover is in very good condition with some observeable surface dirt and two small price tags on the front, which I have not tried to remove. The record is in very fine condition with some minor scuffs and surface scratches.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 8 (BYG 529-708) This album contains music by the Soft Machine, Gary Farr & The T-Bones, the Mark Leeman 5, Deep Feeling, The Ingoes and Dyon Parker. I can't say any more about it because this is the one album of the set that Giorgio Gomelsky did not write liner notes for. The album is in new condition, still sealed in the original shrink wrap.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 9 (BYG 529.709) This album consists of Sonny Boy Williamson and Jimmy Page recorded in April 1965 on one side and Brian Auger and The Trinity recorded between 1964 and 1967 on the other side. The Sonny Boy Williamson tracks are labelled as being his last recordings. The cover is in very fine condition with some very minor surface dirt and the record is in very fine condition with some very minor scuffs and surface scratches.

ROCK GENERATION SERIES VOLUME 10 (BYG 529.710) This album consists of the rest of the tracks from the Sonny Boy Williamson set in Volume 9 above and Julie Driscoll's first recordings recorded in London between 1964 and 1967 (the dates make me think that these are related to the Brian Augur and The Trinity sessions in Volume 9 above. This album is in new condition, still sealed in the original shrinkwrap.
