Although the Byrds' Fifth Dimension was wildly uneven, its high points were as innovative as any rock music being recorded in 1966. Immaculate folk-rock was still present in their superb arrangements of the traditional songs "Wild Mountain Thyme" and "John Riley." For the originals, they devised some of the first and best psychedelic rock, often drawing from the influence of Indian raga in the guitar arrangements. "Eight Miles High," with its astral lyrics, pumping bassline, and fractured guitar solo, was a Top 20 hit, and one of the greatest singles of the '60s. The minor hit title track and the country-rock-tinged "Mr. Spaceman" are among their best songs; "I See You" has great 12-string psychedelic guitar solos; and "I Come and Stand at Every Door" is an unusual and moving update of a traditional rock tune, with new lyrics pleading for peace in the nuclear age. At the same time, the R&B instrumental "Captain Soul" was a throwaway, "Hey Joe" not nearly as good as the versions by the Leaves or Jimi Hendrix, and "What's Happening?!?!" the earliest example of David Crosby's disagreeably vapid hippie ethos. These weak spots keep Fifth Dimension from attaining truly classic status.

If you thought that SONY's 20-bit mastered Compact Disc edition of this album was the best thing since sliced bread - forget it!!! You haven't heard the REAL THING yet. The real thing is this ORIGINAL M-O-N-O vinyl copy of this GORGEOUS Byrds pre-psych effort from 1966 with the classic, unbeatable "Eight Miles High"; truly timeless title track with Van Dyke Parks on pipe organ (at a time of this album, Parks was an in-demand session musician, playing on studio projects by such legends as Randy Newman, Beach Boys, and Tim Buckley), plus a slew of other, gorgeous ballads and celestial harmonies. This is the first album that the band recorded without Gene Clark, and one would imagined that they would've fail miserably , but - lo and behold - they created a timeless classic which not even they themselves, managed to surpass. From the opening chord, to the closing twang, this is one chockfull of ear candies that never stops to amuse, amaze, transfix, mesmerize and inspire. Hearing "Eight Miles High" in ringing, punchy, resonant MONO will make you forever lose any desire to hear the stereo version. A truly, genuinely fantastic listening experience. Old Byrd-o-philes already know that this album boasts massively different (and far superior!) mixes from its stereo counterpart, and I can't even begin to describe the magnitude of the difference. In many ways, mono version is a totally different - and much better - album. This is the original 1966 US Columbia pressing of this album (CL-2549). (a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in a hi-grade PVC inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the record from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS STRONG NEAR MINT,  STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Front  has a few yellowish dust speckles scattered here and there (these tiny spots are not overly obtrusive or distracting) (these can be easily wiped off once the shrink wrap has been removed)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the opening side (nothing significant)

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No ring wear

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
