One of the most cult-followed albums in the history of Brazilian progressive rock is back! Originally released in 1983, but recorded in 1979, After the End has not only withstood the test of time—it has grown with it. In recent years, Bacamarte's vinyl record has gained notoriety in international forums, podcasts, and specialized lists—even being listed on the specialized website ProgArchives among the best albums of the genre, alongside classics from the great British bands of the 70s.
The album was conceived by Mario Neto, guitarist, leader, founder, and main composer of Bacamarte, and presents a sound that directly recalls the symphonic rock of the 70s, but Bacamarte's great strength is its genuinely Brazilian perspective on this European sonic universe. At the time of its original release, the public reception was very good for an independent vinyl record. Daily airplay on the legendary Fluminense FM radio station and sold-out shows at venues like Circo Voador.
Instrumental virtuosity, orchestral and epic atmospheres, acoustic interludes with flutes, guitars, percussion, and a striking lyricism, especially in Jane Duboc's vocal interpretations. This bet on technically refined and creative music, recorded four years earlier under the influence of the best of European progressive rock, was even received by some critics as an avant-garde act in the midst of the explosion of Rock, a movement that was beginning to color Brazilian rock culture in various hues.

Released in 1983, but recorded in 1979, Bacamarte’s Depois do Fim is universally regarded as the crown jewel of Brazilian progressive rock and one of the greatest symphonic prog albums ever made. In a period when the global progressive scene was being eclipsed by new wave and post-punk, this group of young musicians from Rio de Janeiro produced a masterpiece that combined the technical complexity of Renaissance and P.F.M. with the lush, pastoral melodies of Brazilian folk.
The band was the brainchild of guitarist and primary composer Mario Neto, who formed the group in 1974. Despite the album’s late release, its sound is rooted in the "golden era" of 1970s symphonic rock. The record is anchored by Neto’s breathtaking classical guitar work and Márcus Moura’s virtuosic flute and accordion, creating a soundscape that feels both ancient and futuristic. The secret weapon, however, was vocalist Jane Duboc, whose angelic, ethereal delivery (singing in Portuguese) elevated tracks like "Último Entardecer" and the title track to legendary status. Duboc would later become one of Brazil's most celebrated MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) singers, but her work with Bacamarte remains a definitive moment in rock history.
The album’s structure is a balance of high-speed instrumental interplay and haunting vocal passages. The opening track, "UFO," serves as a frantic overture, showcasing the band’s ability to navigate odd time signatures with a lightness of touch often missing in heavier prog. Its legacy has only grown over the decades; for years, it was a "lost" treasure known only to dedicated tape-traders, but reissues in Japan and Europe eventually secured its place in the Prog Archives Top 100 albums of all time.
As of 2026, Depois do Fim has seen a massive resurgence due to a series of high-fidelity 40th-anniversary reissues on vinyl and SACD. Mario Neto remains a figure of immense respect in the guitar community, and the band’s rare live appearances (such as their legendary 2012 reunion) are still discussed with reverence. The album continues to serve as the ultimate gateway for international listeners looking to discover the depth and sophistication of the Brazilian underground.
