Description

Pre-release publisher's promo soundtrack LP to On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, with alternate versions and cut songs
Chappell & Co - EV 2303 - white label pre-release promo LP - this was issued in a plain, generic white jacket.

This is the original, impossibly rare album containing alternate tracks from the soundtrack to Paramount's On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, the big-budget musical starring Barbra Streisand, Yves Montand, and Jack Nicholson.  Produced and issued by Chappell & Co. Music (publishers of the Alan Jay Lerner & Burton Lane score), this was distributed solely at industry functions prior to the film’s release to publicize it.

Some of the songs on this LP feature either alternate Streisand vocals or different orchestrations, and other songs were cut from the film entirely, or not included on the commercially available soundtrack LP, such as "Who Is There Among Us Who Knows" performed by Jack Nicholson.

Track listing:

  • Main Title
  • Hurry! It's Lovely Up Here
  • Love With All the Trimmings
  • Love With All the Trimmings (Reprise) †
  • Wait Till We're Sixty-Five †
  • Melinda
  • Go to Sleep §
  • He Isn't You / She Isn't You †
  • Who Is There Among Us Who Knows? †
  • What Did I Have (part one)
  • What Did I Have (part two) *
  • Come Back To Me
  • On A Clear Day (Montand)
  • On A Clear Day (Streisand) **

† Songs cut from the film or omitted from the soundtrack album.

§ Does not contain Barbra's spoken dialogue.

* Barbra's monologue in the middle was not included. The orchestration of the climax and ending of the song are very different than what was heard in the final film.

** This version of the title tune includes one minute of orchestral underscoring at the beginning. Streisand sings the first lines of the lyric, then more underscoring. At 2:10, Barbra sings the song uninterrupted, just like in the film. You can hear a choir of voices at the end of the song, ‘ooh-ing’ and ‘aah-ing’ behind Barbra. The choir was nixed altogether for the final soundtrack.
