The Archive of American Folk Song, established in 1928, was the first national collection of American folk music. It was created to preserve and recognize the value of the diverse folk heritage of The United States. Initially part of the Music Division of the Library of Congress, it is now housed within the American Folklife Center.

From their Music Division Recording Laboratory, offered is Folk Music Of The United States - Anglo American Songs and Ballads.

Our offered LP here is listed as a reissue, the First Edition being a shellac 78 RPM recording. The brittleness of shellac was (and is) well known, and the relative ease of breakage raised the possibility of losing these Historic Recordings.

The "new" technology of 33 RPM on vinyl rather than shellac reduced the risk of losing these historic recordings carefully collected by The Archive. 

Many record manufacturers listed "Unbreakable" on the vinyl record labels as an important marketing feature - it spoke to the first generation of people ever to hear recorded music. To many, recorded music was so novel and wonderful that broken shellac meant broken hearts.

Thus the appeal to The Carnegie Corporation to provide funding to save this vital part of American culture.

THE VINYL : NEAR MINT

NM : This beautiful record is lightly played with minimal evidence of spindlewear (please see close up photos of the labels). Both sides of the LP surface retain all of their original gloss. 
 
Present is some light sleevewear from the original paper inner sleeve, and very few shallow hairline marks that are cosmetic and will likely produce no or minimal audio interference.
Please Note - The LP has a very slight, as made warp that does not affect the quality of the playback. 
 
Bright, undamaged, Dark Blue and Silver Library of Congress Recording Laboratory Labels (please see photos).
                             
The Record shows exceptional care and handling. 


A Note About The Recording Technology:

In the early 1950’s, the invention of "Long Play" Vinyl Records (33 1/3 RPM) was a new analog Mono technology that became more commercially popular than the existing 78 RPM shellac recordings. While these early Monos are Great Treasures, they can playback with what we modern music listeners call "background noise", and an occasional click or pop.

In the instance of this particular LP of Folk Music History,  the initial transcription for some of the tracks can be a "field recording".
 

Improved mono recording methods later pioneered by Rudy Van Gelder (and others), and then Stereo in late 1950, reduced this noise problem. 

Our grading evaluations examine the record condition as a result of use after it was manufactured.
