Great New Zealand band The Bats are back to remind us how sweet, lovely and connective pop songs can truly be. Though, of course, The Bats never really went away. They've just taken the occasional break in a career that goes back some 30 odd years. Throughout a tenure which has seen them issue eight full-length albums, The Bats have retained the four founding members Robert Scott (lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards), Kaye Woodward (vocals, lead guitar), Paul Kean (bass) and Malcolm Grant (drums).
The 1987 debut album from the indie-pop pioneers, Daddy's Highway, has been remastered for this new vinyl reissue from Captured Tracks/Flying Nun. One of the outstanding New Zealand albums to come out of the 1980s, from the lo-fi pop hook of "North by North" through to the gentle drone of "Tragedy," Daddy's Highway displays a quietly powerful sound that immediately pulls you in. There is a quirky energy throughout the album which glows with shimmering harmonies, whispered vocals, reeling baselines and a sweet sense of despair that is as catchy as it is thought-provoking.
