Beano – Candy Baby/ Rock ‘N Roll (Gonna Save Your Soul) (Deram, 1974) (6.11 585 AC) (VG-/VG+). 7”-Inch Vinyl Single in its original German picture sleeve. Hear it below!
The B-side “Rock ‘N Roll (Gonna Save Your Soul)” is exclusive to this single and is an excellent example of top quality Junkshop Glam, which comes on likes a street fighting Bay City Rollers. It’s a chugging proto-punk tub-thumper with bags of attitude and there are breakdowns to drums and glam rock chants for the Middle-8 – perfect!
The A-side “Candy Baby” sounds like a lost Phil Spector ballad. It’s very similar to “Be My Baby” and, was the opening track on the band’s debut album on Deram in 1975. The album also included two other Beano singles ‘We Don’t Wanna Be The One’ and ‘Little Cinderella’, the band’s hit single.
Beano were: Freddy Phillips (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards and percussion), Ken Smith (harmonies, acoustic and electric guitars), John Birch (harmonies, bass guitar) and Ray Johnson (drums, percussion, harmonies).
The single is in ‘VG+’ condition with a few light marks but it plays well on both sides. The German picture sleeve has a 5cm seam split on the edge opposite the pocket, with minor evidence of a Sellotape repair, although the tape has now been carefully removed (see pic.).
