Beatles 45 A Hard Day’s Night 1964 SCARCEST Label Variation of All, NM/EX!
I can’t test-play vinyl at the minute, so with that said…
This Scranton first pressing features the title on two lines. 99.9% of Scranton copies that you will come across over the course of your entire lifetime will have the title on one line. See compere photo.
But even harder still, if you’re lucky enough to find one of these copies with the two-line title, you’ll see that to the right of the playhole ON BOTH SIDES, the music publishing credits are listed as “Maclen Music, Inc. & Unart Music Corporation.” (That’s in opposite order of the usual Scranton copies, which lists those credits as “Unart Music Corporation & Maclen Music Inc.”)
This is the only two-line title copy I have ever seen, whose Side 2 label lists those credits as simply “Maclen Music.”
Scarcer than the 1969 “Subsidiary of…” label with the black text, and at least equally scarce as the red dome label. Over the decades, I’ve seen maybe half a dozen or so of each of those. This is the only copy I’ve ever seen of this variation.
And it’s in archival collector’s condition.
Vinyl: NM/EX. Using your eagle eye, you will see that Side 2 has one or two extremely light lines in the playing surface. Otherwise, both sides of this record looks nearly unplayed.
Plates: F5/F3. Those hurricane-strength grades will correspond to how you’re going to react when you see this copy’s condition. Machine-stamped triangle with the letters, “IAM” inside it makes this copy pressed by Scranton.
Labels: NM/NM. Gorgeous labels look as brand new as they did the day they were printed 61 years ago.
Sleeve: VG+. Apart from having yellowed a bit, sleeve presents very well. NO SEAM SPLITS.
**Note: All 45’s ship outside of their sleeves in order not to damage the sleeve during shipment. Generic plain, white sleeves and Mylar provided.**
I guarantee that you’ll never see another one of these. And if I’m wrong about that, it won’t be with this label configuration of two-title AND music publishing credits. And if I’m wrong about that, it won’t be in this condition. And if I’m wrong about that, it’s because it can only be this copy.
Think twice about giving this one as a Christmas gift. If you’re a collector, it belongs in YOUR collection.
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
