Beatles 45 Paperback Writer UNDOCUMENTED FIRST PRESSING LABEL RIDGES, VG+!

I can’t test-play vinyl at the minute, so with that said…

As collectors know, the label ridges were introduced in 1968, with the “Subsidiary of…” Capitol labels.  They were transferred onto all of the Apple label variations.  But these earliest examples of the label ridges first appeared on VERY sporadic copies with the first pressing Capitol labels that didn’t include the “Subsidiary of…” text at the bottom perimeter.

Even the most seasoned collectors have never seen one of these.  Therefore, I’m venturing the guess that you’re also seeing one of these for the first time.  I have verified only a small handful of titles that were pressed this way.  Along with “Paperback Writer,” I have also found “A Hard Day’s Night,” “Ticket to Ride” and “Eight Days a Week.”  And of those, “Ticket to Ride” was the only one with Scranton labels.

I have never seen second copies of these, and so as far as my orbit is concerned, the ones that I own are the only copies that exist.  I have put it out to fellow collectors since the early 1990’s to contact me if they own any other titles.  To date, I’ve heard nothing but crickets, and I’ve seen a few tumbleweeds blow by.

This is the copy that is pictured in my two-volume set of Beatles U.S. labels on flash drive.  These are so rare that they hardly even exist!  Let me know what you have if you have one.

Vinyl: VG+/VG+.  Still shines mostly new, with just a few short and light scratches per side.  Retains about 85% new gloss.

Plates: F1/G2.  Machine-stamped asterisk in the dead wax makes this copy pressed in Los Angeles.

Labels: VG+/EX.  Side 1 label has some light writing on it.  Otherwise, both labels would have been EX.  Dirt in the ridges serves to further define them.

Sleeve: VG+.  West Coast thumb tab Capitol sleeve has one small tear per side on the top edge, but NO SEAM SPLITS.

**Note:  All 45’s ship outside of their sleeves in order not to damage the sleeve during shipment. Generic plain, white sleeves and Mylar provided.**

As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up.  Thanks!)
