“All You Need Is Love”

“Baby You’re A Rich Man”

Capitol Promo 45

 Capitol P5964 – 1967

"All You Need Is Love" was written by John when the BBC commissioned the Beatles to write a song for the United Kingdom's contribution to Our World, the first live global television link. The program was broadcast via satellite on June 25, 1967, and was watched by 400 million people in 26 countries. The concept of the song was born out of the BBCs request for a song that was going to be understood by people of all nations. The writing began in late May of 1967, with John and Paul working on separate songs. It was decided that John's "All You Need Is Love" was the better choice, because of its easy to understand message of love and peace. The song was easy to play, the words easy to remember and it encompassed the feeling of the world's youth during that period. John’s original lyrics for this song were left behind after the broadcast on his music stand and snapped up by an associate; in 2005 they were auctioned to a private collector for $1.2 million.

"Baby, You're a Rich Man" was written by John and Paul by joining two song fragments into one song. The verses from "One of the Beautiful People" by John were combined with Paul's previously unaccompanied "Baby, you're a rich man …" chorus. Two songs were combined in a similar fashion to make "A Day in the Life", and "I've Got a Feeling".  The song was recorded and mixed (in mono) on May 11, 1967 at Olympic Sound Studios. The music featured an unusual oboe-like sound which was created with a clavioline (an early forerunner of the synthesiser) and a spin-echo (feed back delay) effect which was used to fill from the end of one line of the verse to the start of the next.

"All You Need Is Love" backed with “Baby You’re A Rich Man” was released as a single on July 7, 1967 in the UK and on July 17, 1967 in the U.S. , and reached Number One in both countries. Later that year, against the Beatles' wishes, it was included on the U.S. album Magical Mystery Tour.

This auction is for an original Capitol Records Promo 45 of “All You Need Is Love,” backed with “Baby You’re A Rich Man”. The record has the asterisk stamped in the dead wax. The record is in Very Good ++ condition, with clean, unblemished labels and glossy vinyl.
