The Beatles Butcher Cover Stereo Unpeeled Second State
As with most of my auction this is an ABSOLUTE AUCTION with NO RESERVE. I let the bidders establish the value. Please check our feedback for the quality of merchandise and service we offer.
When the Beatles' latest album 'Yesterday And Today' was cobbled together by Capitol as a sort of stop-gap catch-up album with the British releases, who would have guessed it would wind up as their most notorious release?
The original cover photo was taken on March 25, 1966 and had the lads dressed in butcher's coats, with bits of raw meat and dismembered dolls strewn about them. The Salvador Dali like photo was a lightning rod of an image that immediately drew fire from critics, retailers and some of the public as well. Capitol Records, who never had much of a spine when it came to controversy anyway, hastily sent out letters to reviewers, radio stations, their distributors to withdraw the album and send them back only days before it was to it hit the streets in mid June.
Then the records returned to various Capitol distribution plants, and had the record removed from the jackets. Some Brainiac came up with the notion that Capitol would save 10¢ a jacket if a new slick was pasted over the old instead of using a whole new jacket. Considering the size of the first pressing, that could save Capitol some serious money. Many of the plants simply destroyed the jackets and waited for replacements, but others followed through with the paste-over, especially in Scranton and Los Angeles.
The stereo to mono mix on these original pressings was a 1-to-5 ratio, that is to say, there were five monos printed for every 1 stereo.
This is one of those rare STEREO printings and is a west coast pressing with the tall thin stereo on the label, and the tiny 5 in the lower right corner on the back. Cover has ring wear on the front and back. Name is written on front cover, in ball-point pen, near middle of opening for the record. Date and initials on upper left back cover. Title spine is perfect. Upper spine is intact, but shows wear, not much though. Bottom spine has a 2 inch split starting on the right from the opening. The cover has no digs or cuts. This cover looks as if no one who owned this had any idea what lies beneath. There is ZERO evidence of anyone even trying to take a peak at the butcher, as many second states do. However, Ringo's dark V-Neck is clearly showing through. I can't get a scan or a picture to show Ringo's V-neck due to the fact that it is very subtle in how it peaks out from under the cover. However I am very familiar with Butcher covers and I assure you it is there! This would make a perfect peel, or a great example as is.
CONDITION: The RECORD is VG- with some scuffs from lots of play, not abuse. Hey you ain't buying this for the record. This still has the original orange Capitol '66 inner sleeve.
