“Can’t Buy Me Love”
“You Can’t Do That”
Capitol 45 with Picture Sleeve
Capitol Records 5150 - 1964
"Can't Buy Me Love" was written by Paul under the pressure of the success achieved by "I Want to Hold Your Hand" which had just reached number one in America. When George Martin first heard "Can't Buy Me Love" he felt the song needed changing: "I thought that we really needed a tag for the song’s ending, and a tag for the beginning; a kind of intro. So I took the first two lines of the chorus and changed the ending, and said 'Let's just have these lines, and by altering the second phrase we can get back into the verse pretty quickly.'" And they said, "That's not a bad idea, we’ll do it that way". "Can't Buy Me Love" was recorded on January 29, 1964 at EMI's Pathe Marconi Studios in Paris, where the Beatles were performing 18 days of concerts at the Olympia Theatre.
The Beatles established four records on the Billboard Hot 100 when "Can't Buy Me Love" hit Number One:
1. It had the biggest jump to Number One; from Number Twenty-Seven to Number One; no other single had ever done this;
2. It gave the Beatles three consecutive Number One songs: "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was replaced at Number One by "She Loves You" which was in turn replaced by "Can't Buy Me Love". The three songs spent a combined total of 14 consecutive weeks at Number One;
3. When "Can't Buy Me Love" went to number one on April 4, 1964), the entire top five of the Hot 100 was by the Beatles, the next positions being filled by "Twist and Shout", "She Loves You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "Please Please Me," respectively. No other act has held the top five spots simultaneously.
4. On April 4, 1964, during its second week at Number One, the Beatles had fourteen songs on the Hot 100 at the same time.
Rolling Stone ranked "Can't Buy Me Love" at Number 289 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song spent five consecutive weeks at Number One. The only Beatles songs to exceed that mark were "I Want To Hold Your Hand" at seven weeks and "Hey Jude" at nine weeks.
"You Can't Do That" was written by John and was one of his semi-autobiographical songs. It contradicted the Beatles’ genial tone with its tense threats, sexual paranoia and nagging, dragging groove. The song's jealousy theme was re-visited in other Lennon compositions, such as "Run for Your Life" and "Jealous Guy".
"You Can't Do That" was recorded on Tuesday, February 25, 1964, in Abbey Road Studios. George Harrison had been presented with a Rickenbacker 360 Deluxe electric 12-string guitar while in New York for The Ed Sullivan Show.Only the second one produced, it was heard for the first time on "You Can't Do That."
“Can't Buy Me Love" back with “You Can’t Do That” was released by Capitol Records on March 16, 1964. By this time, the Beatles were so popular that over 3,000,000 copies of the single had been ordered. These were sent out as quickly as possible, with standard Capitol sleeves. There was a Picture Sleeve for this single, but because of the bulk order, very few copies were issued. The photo is the same as the photo on "I Want to Hold Your Hand," and the sleeve is black and white. This is a very rare sleeve
This auction is for an original Capitol 45 of “Can’t Buy Me Love” backed with “You Can’t Do That”. The Record is in Very Good+ condition, with clean, unblemished labels and unscratched vinyl. The East Coast Picture Sleeve is in Good+ condition, with no writing or seam splits. However, there is considerable wrinkling, as if some sat on it while it was lying on a sofa. There are also two holes in the sleeve: one by Ringo’s hand on the “Can’t Buy Me Love” side, and one by Ring’s shoulder on the other side. There are a couple of small tears on the top.
