Here are the details:

• “LOVE ME DO” b/w “P.S. I LOVE YOU” by The Beatles

• This is Capitol Records 72076.

• It is a Canadian pressing issued by Capitol Records of Canada.

• The Capitol of Canada record 72076 in this auction is “VARIATION FOUR”, and it was issued in late-1964.

• I read at on-line sources that Capitol Records of Canada pressed FIVE VARIATIONS of the Capitol 72076 single.

• “VARIATION ONE” of Capitol 72076 was released February 4, 1963 in Canada. It was the first record issued in all of North America credited to The Beatles on Capitol Records and predates the first Beatles’ release of this single in the U.S. by Vee Jay Records by slightly more than two weeks. Only 1000 copies of Capitol 72076 “VARIATION ONE” were issued. Of the 1000 copies, about 700 copies were sent back to the pressing plant where they were melted and recycled.

• All five variations of Capitol of Canada 72076 have the “Ringo on Drums” version of “Love Me Do”, the same as the original pressing of UK Parlophone R 4949.

• Again, the Capitol of Canada 72076 record in this auction is “VARIATION FOUR”.

• This “VARIATION FOUR” Ultra-Rare late-1964 pressing has the following matrix numbers hand-etched in the trail-off areas:

  • “Love Me Do” (side1) 7XCE 17144 7

  • “P.S. I Love You” (side 2) 7XCE 17145 5

• Additional identification is seen in the labels. When the February 1963 pressings (VARIATION ONE) were manufactured, about 500 extra labels (letter 'R' in the yellow swirl portion, exactly the same labels as the February, 1963 pressings) were printed but not used and simply put to the side at the time. These surplus labels were discovered and used in very late 1964 at the tail-end of the 1964 repressings of Capitol 72076 and were only pressed with matrix numbers 7XCE 17144 7 and 7XCE 17145 5.

• Approximately 500 copies were pressed, making Capitol of Canada 72076 VARIATION FOUR one of the rarest of all Beatles 45's ever pressed!

• This is the record being offered in this auction!

• It has the matrix numbers 7XCE 17144 7 and 7XCE 17145 5 in the trail-offs, and the Side 1 “Love Me Do” label has the ‘R’ in ‘RECORDS’ printed in the yellow swirl portion of the label as you can see in the images.

• The VINYL is in VG CONDITION. There are numerous small and light surface hairlines/scuffs (none of them are “feel-able”). The vinyl has lots of gloss.

• The LABELS have VERY LITTLE WEAR as you can see in the images.

• The record comes in a B/W U.S. Capitol Records stock sleeve. The Capitol of Canada stock sleeve (not included) was black.

An ULTRA-RARE BEATLES SINGLE that will truly be a nice “jewel” in someone’s Beatles’ vinyl collection!
