Audiophiles Get Their Wish: Help! Cut from the Original 1/4-Inch Analog Master Tapes and Pressed at Optimal on a Dead-Quiet LP
NO DIGITAL USED IN MASTERING CHAIN: Working at Abbey Road, Engineers Magee and Berkowitz Used Same Techniques Employed in 1960s for All-Analog Project
This Extraordinary Mono Pressing is the Definitive Analog Version of This Beloved Album
Beatles remastering engineers saved the best for last. Cut from the original 1/4-inch analog master tapes and pressed at Optimal in Germany on a dead-quiet 180g LP, the Beatles' Help! is made by and for audiophiles. More collectable than its stereo and digital processors, and featuring utterly transparent-to-the-source sound, it is completely different than its stereo analog counterpart by way of the all-analog cutting process and audiophile-focused manufacturing. Purists rejoice: NO DIGITAL is involved in any part of the chain. This pressing presents the band as it was meant to be heard, in spectacular mono sound.
Mastered from quarter-inch master tapes at Abbey Road Studios by Grammy-winning engineer Sean Magee and Grammy-winning mastering supervisor Steve Berkowitz, Help! exemplifies sonic transparency and analog purity. While the recent stereo LP and CDs were created from digital remasters, Magee and Berkowitz cut the records for the Help! mono LP employing the same procedures used in the 1960s, guided by the original albums and detailed transfer notes made by the original cutting engineers. Working in the same room at Abbey Road where most of the Beatles’ albums were initially cut, the pair first dedicated weeks to concentrated listening, fastidiously comparing the master tapes with first pressings of the mono records made in the 1960s. Using a rigorously tested Studer A80 machine to play back the precious tapes, the new vinyl was cut on a 1980s-era VMS80 lathe.
On the surface, Help! is the soundtrack to the Beatles’ second feature film. Yet the 1965 record marks the emergence of several new directions for the band—and benefited from the biggest strides in production technology yet. Thematically encompassing mature sexual longing, uncertainty, estrangement, infatuation, and innocence, the group pounced on an armada of available instruments—acoustic guitars, bongos, electric pianos, flutes, and even strings—to deliver one of the greatest pop albums time has ever known.
On this definitive analog pressing, the timeless poignancy of “Yesterday” comes across with truly unimaginable heartbreaking sincerity. The volume pedal George Harrison uses for the first time on “I Need You” and “Yes It Is” is fully discernible. You can hear the woody cavity of he back of the acoustic Gibson guitar Ringo beats to add percussion to “I Need You.” And yes, the fuzz-pedal bass track Paul McCartney added to the original on “Think for Yourself”—his first overdub on record—is preeminent. As is the soulfulness of the falsetto voices.
The advances in sonics were largely made possible by new Studer J-37 four-track recorders. Not only does this new LP pressing present the enhancements like never before, it adds to our enjoyment and insight of the music, allowing listeners to sense get as close to what went down as possible. So, and the 1:10 mark of “I Need You,” the moment when Lennon hits the rim of the snare drum comes alive, the happy accident possessing the same amount of body, richness, detail, and depth as the rest of the landmark music on this set.
Audiophiles, you demanded it, and now, you have it. Help! on a definitive analog pressing that can be passed down to the generations.
