READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning.  I can’t test-play at the minute. Only some collectors know that there’s a very hard to find Columbia consignment first pressing of this title that has the running time for “Long Tall Sally,” which uses Scranton labels. That’s it for Columbia first pressing consignments until the 1968/1969 “Subsidiary of…” issue, right?

Wrong.  There’s this one, which is a first pressing label far rarer, that most collectors aren’t even aware exists.  It features Jacksonville in-house labels with micro-print, and a large gap between the Side designations and the track listings.  The first time most collectors have even seen this variation was on the black or green target labels from the “Subsidiary of…” 1968/1969 pressings, not realizing that it was a straight transfer from this label.  (See Compere photos.)

This is the only copy I’ve ever seen in my life, and until last summer, I didn’t know it existed either.  The second edition of my books on flash drive will feature photos from this copy.

And you can own it.

Vinyl--- This copy falls somewhere between VG++ and Excellent.  Both sides have the “now you see it, now you don’t” manufacturer’s defects that look like scratches until you tilt the vinyl toward the light source, and then they disappear.  Otherwise, there are only a few scant light hairlines per side, not many at all.  Nice vinyl!

Plates--- H17/H18.  No Capitol insignias are present in the dead wax, because this copy was not pressed by Capitol.

Cover--- VG. Both front and back covers have light to moderate dirtwear and yellowing.  Top and bottom seams have shelfwear.  Top seam has a 3-inch split at the spine’s side.

Back cover has two inspection stamps.  Looks like the first stamp didn’t take, so a second one was necessary.  A nice little historical touch, when the unions required inspection stamps!

Name written discreetly in ballpoint.  See if you can spot it.

Labels--- EX/EX.  Both labels present 1964-brand new.  However; each side has just a few light spindle marks, not bad.

Concentric ring being close to the outer edge of the label and very thin, plus a thick and wide concentric dead wax groove are the trademarks of Columbia lathes.

Capitol Inner Sleeve--- VG. Original blue Capitol inner sleeve is present.  Presents VG+, but one side seam and the bottom seam each have a very small split.

A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original Capitol inner sleeve en route.

RIAA: 3

If you’ve never seen one of these before, you should assume that you won’t see another one.  It took me 50 years of serious collecting to become aware of its existence!

As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up.  Thanks!)
