READ THIS! These records are NOT sold for perfect sound quality. They’re sold for their scarcity and VISUAL grading. They’ve been in storage for a decade, and they WILL play with surface noise that can be addressed with D4 or a VPI cleaning. I can’t test-play at the minute. Please don’t bid if this is a problem for you.
Beatles LP Revolver Capitol Record Club 1968 Black Label in Shrink, EX!
Recently, a friend of mine contacted me to ask whether there were any differences in the Revolver Record Club LP’s. I pulled this copy out of storage, took it and a few other copies of Revolver to the local record store and compared them all.
I can’t hear any differences in the mixes, like other Record Club copies. But what I do hear are differences in clarity. Two examples are that in “Yellow Submarine,” Ringo’s vocals are subdued in the center channel, and his drumming is prominent in the left channel.
Similarly, in “Tomorrow Never Knows,” it has all the same elements as the commercially released stereo mix LP’s, except that there’s more clarity. Commercially released copies get muddy after the backward lead guitar, to the end of the track. This copy had fooled me at first, making me think there were extra elements going on in the mix. But it turns out that you can just hear them much better.
The result is that the left channel sounds a lot busier on this copy. Commercial copies blend everything together, whereas this copy provides more detail. One very cool revelation is that after the line, “Listen to the color of your dreams,” the seagulls pan from left to right. Then when Lennon sings, “It is not living,” the harmonium comes in on the right, and pans back to the left. That’s also present on the commercially issued copies, but it’s so thick and muddy, you don’t notice.
This mix was a great education, pointing out what you’re missing on your stereo commercial copies.
Vinyl--- EX/EX. With the exception of a very light and long soft scuff on Side 1, that side shines 99% brand new. Side 2 has some very light cloudiness in the playing surface. Neither blemish affects playback.
Plates--- Side 1 is a Decca plate, and it lacks an alpha-numeric from Capitol. Side 2 has a Capitol plate, H1. There are no Capitol insignias present on either side, because this copy wasn’t pressed by Capitol.
Both sides do have the extra numeral 8 inserted into the catalogue number and side designations.
Cover--- STUNNING EX. That’s significant, because as collectors know, Record Club covers will yellow, dry out and fall apart over not too long a period of time.
Shrinkwrap has kept this cover looking as new as I’ve ever seen. Front and back covers do have some dirtwear and ringwear. But if you gently pull the shrink away from the cover, you can clearly see underneath, that the covers were fully protected on both sides.
The only damage worth mentioning is that the top and bottom seams did ssustain some small chipping from shelfwear. Also, the shrink on the back cover has about a one-inch split in the center, between John and Ringo.
Record Club cover has the three diagonal white lines in the top left front cover and top right back cover. Catalogue number with the inserted 8 appears below the diagonal lines on the back cover and the spine.
Labels--- EX/EX. Both labels look very close to new, with the exceptions of maybe a few liver spots from age. Both labels include the additional numeral 8 in the catalogue numbers. Some whitewear on one side of the concentric ring. NO SPINDLE MARKS.
Inner Sleeve--- VG. Generic white inner sleeve with no die-cut hole for the labels to show is present. Sleeve presents VG+. Sleeve has some creases at the corners from improper insertion at the factory. Also has a light horizontal crease about a quarter of the way down. Slight yellowing. Bottom seam has a split just over one inch long.
A generic inner sleeve will be provided, so as not to damage your original inner sleeve en route.
RIAA: 16
**Black label Record Club issues are VERY hard to find at all. But to find one in this condition is a stellar achievement. If you already have one, think of a fellow collector who would freak over it as a Christmas gift.**
(As an aside for those who are interested, the comparisons were made with:
1971 Apple Los Angeles
1976 Orange Capitol Jacksonville
1978 Winchester Purple Capitol
1983 Black Capitol Specialty)
As these records have been in storage for many years, they will play back with crackling and tics, however; a good moisturizing and cleaning with either D4 Discwasher or a VPI machine always clears them up. Thanks!)
Note: All LP’s ship outside of their album covers in order not to damage the covers during shipment.
CAUTION! There has been a startling increase in bidders canceling their bids. A word to the wise, I have started blocking any and all bidders who retract their bids regardless of the reason.
Please don’t bid unless you’re willing to honor your amount, okay? Thanks!
(Please note: Regarding play-testing, my Technics turntable has somehow seized. The tone arm is stuck in the up position, and I can’t get it to fully return to its cradle. Is there anyone out there, who can tell me if this is an easy fix? Thanks!)
