1963 mono -1N withdrawn UK 1st pressing with ‘Parlophone’ rim labels, ‘Recording First Published’ and ‘JOBETE’ label credit.

This record is a genuine UK 1st pressing and is the very earliest in the production cycle of records pressed ahead of the Friday 22nd November 1963 release date.

Recording for With the Beatles was still taking place as late as 24th October 1963 and with the impending deadline only a month away an initial ‘dead wax’ impression was made from the original Abbey Road master tapes.

Mastered at high volume with an enhanced dynamic, this initial -1N matrix cut was removed from the production cycle early on and replaced by a succession of new and different sounding matrix masters before finally arriving at the most common -7N matrix.

These -1N matrix pressings are now becoming extremely rare and highly collectable. This copy also has the ultra rare Jobete label credit which was changed almost immediately to Dominion Belinda.

Visual: Side 1 VG+ to EXC-  Side 2 EXCELLENT  

The record still retains its original high gloss sheen and is undulled. -1N matrix copies of this record with the Jobete label credit are now becoming extremely difficult to find and this copy is well preserved and in superior above average condition. Although it shows clear evidence that it has been played it still retains its original freshness. There are some light surface marks visible in daylight on side one, the most noticeable being a 3 cm mark on track two and three, with some other marks noticeable on the run out groove. Non of the marks are feelable or effect play. Side one grades at or around very good plus to excellent minus. Side two is in impressive condition for vinyl of this vintage with only some very light superficial marks visible under strong light. Side two grades at full excellent, possibly excellent plus. The disc lies 100% flat on the turntable.

Labels:  EXCELLENT

A great set of rare labels in excellent condition. The text is unworn. When angled towards the light there are visible spindle trails to each label. Side two carries the ultra rare Jobete label credit, only found on some of these very early – 1N matrix pressings. There is no writing or personalization to any label. Side two also carries the mis-spelling of ‘Gotta’ on You Really Gotta Hold on Me. Side one carries the KT tax code.

Audio:  MINT-

The audio quality on this particular copy is outstanding. All music signals are unworn and there is no groovewear or distortion of any kind. This copy has the unmistakable sound quality of a -1N matrix pressing which is altogether more dynamic than the more common -7N matrix pressings. For example the 'hand claps' on Roll Over Beethoven are more pronounced with clearer audio separation than the -7N pressings.  The rich analogue sound is crisp and clear. Very little surface noise and most gaps are silent There are no loud pops or ticks and the record does not jump or stick.

EXCELLENT-

A well preserved example of this the very earliest 1st issue 1963 Garrod & Lofthouse cover with the very dark image of the Beatles and the miss-spelling of ‘Gotta’ on You Really Gotta Hold on Me. The front panel retains its original high gloss sheen and has a couple of light thumbnail bends near the opening edge. There is minimal wear to the corners. On close inspection I detected some storage wear to the lower right corner along the flipback edge. The opening edge is un-feathered and shows little signs of wear. The rear panel has some discoloration and ageing. There is a light abrasion on the rear panel at the top left which suggests a name or mark may have been removed. The spine is in pristine unworn condition. All flipbacks are intact and appear strong. I deliberated over a full excellent grade so the sleeve is conservatively graded at excellent minus.
